Hardware store 5gal paint strainer, stick of wood, spring clamps. Worked like a charm :)

I did find it interesting that the wort inside the bag didn't boil; only the wort around the outside of it. I wonder how that alters the brew if at all?

shouldn't be any different, boiling bubbles come from the bottom of the pan so they were most likely just going around the strainer, looks like a good rig I might have to borrow the idea because leaf hops are a pain to strain.
 
The overall temp of your pot is 212* (depending on your elevation!) and the isomerization of the hops are taking place.
