Hi All

I am looking for some info on how to prepare some older hop vines for the season. Someone just offered me the proceeds of their established hop plants at a new residence they just obtained. No one trimmed them back before winter. Here in Michigan the frost is still in the ground but not for long. I am thinking that I would best trim them at the ground level, maybe to soil level ? Or leaving some stick out. Also think from what little I have read that possible root trimming mite be in order.

Any QUICK advice will be appreciated. I know time is getting short.

Thanks in advance.

Trim them at ground level. Anything that comes up this spring will come up from the buried root ball. I don't see value in trimming the roots, unless you plan on dividing the plant and doubling your hop harvest (depending on space available of course).

Cheers!

Other than the root ball question that is about what I was thinking on doing and wanted confirmation which you provided. No dividing the roots this time around. Will just take what we can get and work from there. Absolutely no idea what type of hops the plants are. Not sure if a nursery could be any help in identifying. Might have another source at an extension dept from a nearby college. I guess in the end whatever they are is what they are :)
