I have read in some places and not read in others that I should strain the wort before putting it into the fermenter. Right now my first batch is fermenting. I did not strain the wort. However, I did use those mesh bags for the hops and left the gunk on the bottom of the kettle. Is it necessary to strain the wort?

No, not necessary at all. I gave up straining early on in my brewing career. No matter how much you strain, you will have trub at the bottom of the primary. I guess I don't really care if it's a little thicker because I didn't strain.

I've heard that keeping the break material out of the fermenter is a bit more important when doing lagers, but with ales... dump it in and let the yeast sort it out!

Although, if I'm pouring from my kettle into my primary, I'll run it through a strainer. But that's it.
