What are the pros and cons of each?

I am leaning towards the mesh braid since it is so much cheaper. Is the false bottom worth the added costs?

Braid can float, and will crush if you get too rough with it.

That being said, I've never used anything but a braid. They are cheap and easy to replace.

Somebody else will have to chime in on false bottoms, I'm interested to hear about them too. I may use one in my keggle MLT project, if I ever get around to it.

I use a braid as well but I am doing batch sparging. If I was going to do fly sparging I would probably use a false bottom to help with channeling effects. Although I have read that you can use a braid as long as it is long enough and has a great enough surface area to help compensate for channeling.
