I am making a hopper for my new MM3 grain mill out of pine and I'm wonering if I should put a polyurethane finish on it, paint it or leave it raw? I thoght that it would be easier to keep clean with some sort of a finish on it. Originally I thought nothing of it, but friend is concerned that it wont be food safe with a polyurethane finish or paint on it and he thinks that I should leave it raw.

Thoughts?

Pretty sure shellac is food safe, I think they use it on candies like m&ms. But if it was me I would leave it unfinished. It's just grain touching it and you should just be able to brush it off.
