Anyone else had 21st amendment's Back in Black, black IPA and found it lacking? It seems more like a porter to me. No strong hop character on the nose, and relatively light bitterness? Maybe I don't understand the Black IPA style. Can anyone explain it?

I love black IPAs and that doesn't sound like one to me. Around sprint time Magic Hat puts out a mix pack with their Demo Black IPA in it. It was decent, but I would have to agree that the Pitch Black is the best I've had.

A black IPA is usually dry and hoppy like it should be. The difference is in the malts. Usually it uses roasted malts and has a coffee or cocoa essence to it.
