I made a 1L starter about 36 hours ago and put it on the stir plate. First time using a stir plate. The volume is still at 1L. Does the starter volume typically stay the same or should it increase? I'm using a foam stopper.

The starter is water with some chemicals dissolved in it. A yeast cell is a bag of water with some chemicals dissolved in it. So while the answer is undoubtedly yes expressed to some number of decimal places the practical answer is no other than from the losses of evaporation. The stopper should prevent that.
