I just put an oatmeal stout in the fermenting bucket. I calculated everything for a 5.5 gallon batch. I USUALLY boil off 1 gallon per hour so I started the boil with 6.5 gallons. I ended with a hair under 5 gallons for some reason... I checked the OG and it is dead on the money so I would have missed my OG a little bit ( still within range) had I hit my volume.... I went ahead and just pitched the yeast rather than adding more water...would you have topped it up? and should I add a half gallon or so to reach the volume?
