Volcano Brewing was brewing at least since last December - we visited with my son who came to see us for Christmas. I don't remember the particular name of their pale ale; it was OK, but pretty much run of the mill, in my opinion. It is not widely distributed, if at all, and the brewery at the north end of Lake Arenal is a long way from anywhere. Much, much better is Segua (a red ale) and Libertas (a pale ale) from Costa Rica Craft Brewing Co. in Cartago. These are on tap at a number of places and you can find retail outlets also. Not that it is easy, but it is possible. They have brewed several other styles, but I haven't found any in retail outlets, and the on tap locations are too far for us to go just for a beer.
I have just brewed my first ever batch, a True Brew Canadian Ale kit, with equipment and the kit brought from the US. At about 5 weeks after brewing, I'd say it's drinkable, but not outstanding.
However, there are now two LHBS in Costa Rica. TicaBirra
http://www.ticobirra.com in Pavas (more or less near the U.S. Embassy), has about 4 extract kits (all Munton's, I believe), and some equipment as well. Bodega de Chema
http://www.bodegadechema.com , in Los Yoses (East San José) has some items for sale, but never having been there, I cannot say for sure what they have. The online store has only a few things listed.
It appears that home brewing here in CR is poised to grow.
By the way, Oregon Hopster, we are originally from Medford, and boy, do I miss all the craft brews from Oregon!
