So my wife is having our first baby soon. The due date is April 22. To commemorate my son's birth (and my wife's triumphant return to alcoholic beverage consumption), I've got a saison bottled and conditioned, ready to open when we get back from the hospital. I also have a mead in a carboy ready to bottle, so I'll have something to cellar for a few years.
But the supply of everyday drinkin' beer in my kegerator is rapidly dwindling. Out of 3 taps, 1 is now empty and another is close behind. I brewed Saturday, so that'll go in the empty slot when it's ready. But I still need to brew 1 more to refill that other keg that's almost empty.
I work Mon-Fri, so that leaves Sat/Sun as possible brew days. And this Sat/Sun (April 6-7) are out because we already have plans. That leaves me with 2 free weekends before the baby is born ... if he doesn't come early.
Do I tempt fate and brew the weekend of April 13-14, a mere 9 days before our due date? My fear is that she will go into early labor at the precise moment I mash in to start my 8-hour brew day, leaving me a very difficult choice of where to focus my attention.
Or do I just wait and plan on brewing during the first month after the baby's born? I'll be off from work, but I keep hearing something about "no sleep" ...
I'm looking for some shared experience from the recent dads (and moms too) out there on HBT. How soon after the birth of a baby were you able to start brewing again? How shortly before your baby was born did you brew? And if anyone has any awesome stories about a wife/girlfriend/babymama going into labor during your brew session, I'd love to hear it!
Cheers!
