Why do homebrewers use gravity instead of plato?

After brewing a beer with a commercial brewer, everything is done in plato. When the brewer converts the lingo to a homebrewer, he has to calculate that into gravity. A brewer friend asked, "Why don't we use gravity?". Why don't we homebrewer's use plato for our measurements instead of gravity?
 
Lets flip that question around. Why do professional brewers insist on using Plato? What makes it so special? Why should homebrewers switch to that unit of measure, there's way more of us than them.:p
 
I don't use Plato, because he is pretty much dead and Gravity is still with us.
 
God I haven't played with Plato since I was a kid. Ate a fair share of it in my day too...
 
I used to eat Plato. And this sounds like the same scenario the U.S. has in the mid eighties. English or metric?
