Thermonator as Heat Exchanger

I was wondering if a Shirron plate or a Thermonator could be used as a heat exchanger in a mash system? Thoughts?
 
I'm fairly certain I've seen examples of this posted in the forums. I imagine the critical issue is keeping the wort side free of accumulated debris. One way to mitigate that is to set the grain bed through recirculating (ie: vorlauf) with the plate chiller out of the loop, then once the return stream is running clear you can switch the chiller in and start the control process...
