I tend to wait since it just came out, I am careful about the so-called patches too. .XP pATCHES windows took me down. that would be the patch that took many of us out. thought it was called Vesta, my bad.

I just installed XP (after wiping the HD and Windows 2000) on my 3+yr old laptop a few months ago, don't see Vista happening anytime soon

yeah i installed it.. not worth it at all...

i have 2gigs of memory, a dual core 3800+, and a 6600gt video card... at idle my system resouces were at 12%.... 12%!!!! thats so fing recockulus.. with xp it was at .02%... i definently reinstalled windows xp, and installed some visual software to make it look the same.. and i am still at .02%...

save your money, if you get a new computer.. go for it.. but dont upgrade..

Mac OS X on a 24" iMac on an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz w/2 gigs of RAM and a GeForce 7600 GT. I'm happy with the other side for now. :)

My work machine is a mirror image of my Mac hardware-wise, but it's a PC and I'm running XP only because my employer won't shell out for Vista. XP suits me fine.

Yeah, yeah...I know so many have Macs, others wont upgrade cause its new, all kinds of people hate Microsoft, etc... And thats fine with me. I just wanted to know from any of the people out there who had already installed it to see if anyone had an easy time of it.

I havent liked a Microsoft OS since Windows 95. To me that was the last one that worked without problems. 98 sucked, 2000 wasnt any better, and XP drove me completely crazy with screen freezes, programs not respondng, erroring out all the time, and on and on, etc... And not just my own, but a lot of other people I know as well. (I know... I know... I should have went with a Mac a long time ago. But I guess Im just a glutton for PC punishment.)

Anyway, I had too many problems with my XP SP2, and decided to get Vista. Anything had to be better... Well, it definately didnt go smooth, and isnt over yet. After reinstalling every driver known to man, everything is 3/4 of the way there. Unfortunately, now I need more RAM, a new graphics card and a new sound card. Geez...

aekdbbop, I see where you are coming from, as so many people are complaining about needing to upgrade basically their entire computer, other than my processor and hard drive. I would reinstall XP if I didnt hate it so much.

I'm still at W2000 on the laptop. I doubt it could run XP. I've had a few conversations with IT types & they aren't happy with Vista. Too much of a resource hog. One guy said less than 15% of his company's computer can run it at all, but people whine about getting it, then whine because it's slow or their porn was wiped out by the upgrade. He said they canned three salesmen on the latter.

Yup, seems like its a plain old hog for sure. If my XP hadnt drove me crazy I wouldnt have went to it...but, into the breech I went.

Maybe I was trying to be nice. Have three 'puters up and & running at any given time.. Vista sucks. :D

Hey guys, I'm new to this here forum, thought I would add my $0.02 to this thread. I do driver testing at work for wifi hardware, and use vista ALOT. In addition, we put a genuine (though not legitimate) copy of vista on a box in our house.
After playing with it for over a month, and seeing the direction microsoft is taking, both of my roomates and i migrated to openSUSE 10.2 with KDE.
I honestly have to say, this was the easiest OS install I've ever had, easier than the XP or Vista.
GO LINUX!

Now there's a straight forward answer! Thanks Copper!

Notta Prob, tony. ;)

mrmota23- Linux rules, I been watching it for years. Red Hat was brilliant in the old days.....still is IMHO, MS just stole what hackers/crackers exchanged with each other for free.

A billionaire....Go Figger

I have no intention of getting Windows Vista. It sounds completely pointless to me, not to mention all the difficulties people are having with general functionality. The Linux family of OS's are looking better and better.

Apparently its hell if you have a nice grapic card as it wont work with open gl.

Well here's my plug for linux, been running it since about 04, and have never looked back. I have found ubuntu to be my favorite thus far, so easy to use, virus + spyware immune. It's legally free. FOSS community rocks. I don't know, I just can't ever see going back.

I've been looking into Ubuntu just a little bit recently. I had considered the RedHat version a few years ago, but never went after it. One thing I'm concerned about is being able to run apps, specifically games, on Linux. Any idea if that presents a major problem?

I've been running Linux as my desktop computer and servers since 2001/2. (RH8 !) I ran RH and Fedora until last week. I moved to Ubuntu and it great. The problem with Fedora is that its always changing and there always seems to be something broken.

I'm writing this on Kubuntu 6.10 "Edgy", in a Konqueror browser, listening to Basic Brewing Podcasts on Amarok.
Here is a screenshot. http://picasaweb.google.com/beermeister1/SteamMashing/photo#5037220606561172690

Linux and Ubuntu rock.

I moved to Linux way back when because we were being inundated by viruses in Win98SE. Linux has been 100% reliable all along and it gets better feature wise every month.

yeah so **** yeah for liniux (sorry toasted)

here;'s another screeny

Is it pretty easy to set up? I'm pretty interested, but wouldn't I have to partition my hard drive or something like that? Feel free to tell me to go do my own research if you don't feel like answering all these questions. :fro:

I totally used to be into Linux, but recently I removed Linux from all my computers. The reason: I don't want to spend time maintaining two systems. Since I have some programs that require Windows anyway (one of them is Adobe Premiere) I opted for all Windows.

I like Vista, though I might be the last one to get it. It's a reason for people to buy a new computer with a bigger processor and I work for AMD ;)

Kai

Well, I can understand that; I have multiple computers myself. Now get back to work, damn it! (I own AMD stock) ;)

I'm no Pro, but this link totes some Kick Butt info on Linux. I personally would not attempt to go to Linux unless I had more than one computer, but I guess you suspect that. ;) I have played around with RedHat 6.0 (oldie but goodie) - never really dived in as I would have liked. Too many irons in the fire.

Also, I visit here a lot, Crackers as well as Hackers hang here and are phenomenal as far as knowledge is concerned.

Maintain? I don't understand how you had to maintain it? If you get a solid, stable distro, and don't **** with it, there's nothing that will ever make you need to maintain anything.

Get a liveCD and test it out first, download the iso over at www.ubuntu.org, burn it to a cd and play a bit. It won't change a thing on your system. If you decide that you like it and want to start off dual booting, like most people, there is plenty of info out there on that, either do a google search or www.ubuntuforums.org is amazing.
There also seems to be a few knowledgeable linux guys here, including myself who loves to help people see the light.

+1 for using the Ubuntu (or Kubuntu or Xubunu) Live CD to see if it works well on your machine and if you like it.

+1 for it not needing much maintenance once you get it set up. Stay away from Fedora for this reason. They are always issuing updates and things are always broken.

See this for why you might not be interested in upgrading to Vista.

Torchiest,
Have you had the time to research the links/opinions/stuff folks have seen fit to pass along to you?

Just wonderin'....in retrospect after reading this thread I observe us (me included) as being quite passionate about our OS. Almost as much as our political leanings and favorite brewing recipe.

Anyhow it pans out, I wish you the best,

Yes, I've been doing some research on it. Overall, it's pretty appealing, but the part that has me hung up is difficulties running games. I'm a pretty serious gamer, and not being able to play on Ubuntu is a bit discouraging. I'm considering doing a dual-boot setup though, just because everything else about Ubuntu sounds cool. :)

I'm a developer and have been running Vista since last fall - with the correct understanding of the OS, I haven't had a single problem...

I still run XP on my gaming PC but now that NVidia released their 8800 Vista SLI drivers, I'll probably be upgrading it soon.

Obtaining release candidate versions for Vista was a snap, actually.

:off: John Beere - what kind of app(s) are you developing? I take it you're working with .NET? If so, what version (of the framework, not VS)?

I am lead developer / director of technology for a firm which specializes in financial software. My particular product is used across the US (including the Federal Reserves) as well as several Caribbean countries such as Aruba and Trinidad. The current client is a few years older and is written in classic ASP, VB, and C++. The server was recently re-written using .NET 2.0 and the client will soon follow.

The last Microsoft O/S I have was Windows 2000 that was back in 2001. I upgraded to Linux back then, and have never looked back. Running Opensuse 10.2 and lovin it :) If you have upgraded to Vista. My Sympathies:mug:

I'm kinda late to the thread. But after messing with PC's own my own and for a living for the last 20 years. I have 1 simple rule for myself and advice to pass along to friends and family

Never ever Upgrade a computer !

If your old one won't do something you want it to do or is no longer filling your needs. Buy a new one that will!

Unless of course you have nothing better to do than waste hour after hour messing with computers or just happen to love working with the things then by all means upgrade away.

Come on, it's not that bad. It all depends on what kind of computer you have. Way back in the day, when I didn't know a lot about computers, we got a couple Compaqs. They're almost impossible to upgrade in any meaningful way, because everything is proprietary. However, I still upgraded the memory, processor, and video card on my last Compaq, before I ventured into the world of piece-by-piece computers.

My second to most recent computer was put together at a shop, following my specs, and I built my latest computer myself. Computers done in this way are WAY easier to upgrade, especially if you build them yourself, for the simple fact that you know what everything is and what goes with what. I fully intend to upgrade my video card, memory, processor, and hard drives somewhere down the line, and I'm fully prepared to do so without any problems. :D

I have to stress, however, that putting it together originally on your own is really the key, because you know exactly what you have to work with. I have a really high-end motherboard that will see me through many years of upgrades.

I've done hundreds of upgrades on various types of hardware and OS's over the years and if the system hasn't been damaged, it can be a good idea. Any UNIX-like OS is simple (although the HP 9x->10x was tricky). I haven't down any upgrades on Windows systems since the 3.51/NT mess. For those, it's format and install.

My laptop can't run Vista, so it stays at W2000.
