Compression fittings ok for copper?

Just want to verify that I can use compression fittings for a propane set up. There are conflicting reports on the forums here - some say there are no problems, others say you shouldn't (no reasons cited though).

The needle valves at any of the hardware stores near me only have compression fittings, which is why I ask.
 
Generally, compression fittings are a no-no on pressurized gas systems. Flared fittings are preferred.
 
threaded with sealant, flared, or soldered only for gas.
