Quick question guys...this is the 3rd time I've added oak but the first time I've used toasted oak chips. I added them to my porter a week ago and today noticed some sort of oily film at the top. Not sure what it is...has anyone ever noticed anything like this from adding oak chips? It almost looks like the film of hop oils that gather at the top sometimes during a boil...

Did you sanitize the chips?
Hops do it sometimes, leach oils that leave a film, I don't see why oak wouldn't either.
Mine didn't when I oaked it. But I had soaked the chips in 7.5oz of bourbon for the whole ferment time.
I oak a lot of wines, but few beers. I've never seen an oily sheen on any of them. I don't sanitize the chips by boiling, though.
