Stainless Steel Brew Pot

So I went ahead and got the $9.99 4 gallon ss pot from the dollar store. I think its going to work fine to boil water and perhaps do a dual boil one day.
How have people marked the gallon marks on these? Is it ok to mark it on the inside with an engraver?

I marked the outside of my pot with a sharpie and knotched my spoon in gallon increments

I did the same with the sharpie, but I think it already wiped off. I will cut notches at the different levels of my metal spoon, good idea.

I bought a 24" SS rule from ebay for like $10. What's great is that I can use it for several vessels and there is no marking to be done. Just put some water in there and note where the level is on the rule. I'm making a chart in excel showing the volume in gallons and quarts, for each vessel I own.
