I'm looking for everyone's favorite IPA recipe that doesn't require mashing, because I'm lazy and would rather be drinking! I boil up 1 1/2 gallons with all this, for only 30 minutes...

7.5lbs LME
1lb Crystal
1/2lb toasted
1/4 lb chocolate

4 oz cascade (boiling)
1oz cascade (finishing)
1/2oz cascade (steeping)

First I boil the water (1 1/2 gallons) then add 4 oz hops and malt extracts, bring to boil again for 20 minutes, add 1 more oz hops for 10 minutes, turn off heat and add 1/2 oz steeping hops, stir, cover. I have my 6 gallon plastic fermenter filled with 3 gallons of water with some ice added on top, and after the hops steep covered for 1-2 minutes I pour the boiled wort into the fermenter. I pitch the yeast immediately and cover with lid and airlock.

And whats the big difference in dry-hopping vs. steeping hops? If you add the steeping hops at the VERY end, like a tea, you shouldn't lose much if any oils and it seems MUCH easier = more time drinking...:drunk:

You might as well just drink your wort. You seem to be in an awful hurry and that's not good when it comes to making great beer. Patience is your friend.

Anyways... As far as your recipe...I do all-grain, so I can't help you with an extract recipe.

When you steep, the wort is hot, so you still lose a lot of the aromas from your hops. The reason to dry hop is strictly to add aroma.

I saw you say cover, don't cover your beer when brewing to avoid off flavors.

If you can brew with more water, do it. The more the better. I never brew with less than 5.5 gallons, but I bought a brew pot for that purpose.

He's not covering his beer while it's boiling. He's covering it while steeping hops, which is what's supposed to be done.

You're probably going to get a good amount of flak for the way you brew, but if it works for you, that's fine. I'm not exactly sure what you're asking, but I would recommend you drop the chocolate malt, only because it isn't really necessary. You could replace it with the same amount by weight of carapils/dextrine malt, and probably get really nice results - or even another adjunct, like oats, wheat, or corn, which are very common in British brewing.

Here is one I am getting ready to do:

6lbs amber LME - 60minutes
6lbs gold LME - 20 minutes

3oz each Summit & Warrior for 60 mins
3oz each Summit & Warrior for 2 mins

Any opinions on this?

Thanks

First off this looks more like an IIPA than an IPA. The OG is going to be close to 1.090. Second, the amount of hops in there is insane. Just for the two 3oz, 60 minute additions I think you're looking at 250+ IBUs.

Exactly. This is a waste of hops. No human can detect IBU's much higher than 100 anyways. That's why you'll rarely see a commercial IPA that says the exact IBU count when it's above 100. Most of the time, it says 100+, because after 100, it doesn't matter.

To me, it's a waste of hops. Spread out your hops schedule.

2oz - Summit/Warrior @60 min. (2 oz. total, not each)
2oz - Summit/Warrior @45 min.
2oz - Summit/Warrior @30 min.
2oz - Summit/Warrior @15 min.
2oz - Summit/Warrior @10 min.
2oz - Summit/Warrior @1 min.

this would be something more likely done in IPAs. The amount of hops is still crazy though. You could probably lower it to a 1/2oz. of each @ all times and be good.

Thanks for the input guys....Shorty, nice breakdown.....I actually said the same thing when I saw the 384 IBU's ....."Holy Crap"!

I'm planning on doing this one this weekend.

7.25# Pale LME
1/2# Caramel
1 oz Cascade @ 60 min
2 oz Cascade @ 20 min
1 oz Cascade @ 5 min
White Labs California Ale yeast

I'm still pretty new at this, so bear with me if I'm uncouth. This is my 3rd batch.

Cheers!
