Out of the million posts here, I'm sure there's something on this, so forgive me for not being able to find it (I'm just anxious to get started).
Anyway, I've been using 12" or so false bottom in a Sanke keg for my mash tun with an electric HERMS. My batch size has been 10 gallons. I've had no problems hitting my initial gravity. And, the beer has been fantastic....so good that I'm upgrading the brewery to 20 gallon batches to keep up with demand.
My new mash tun is approx. 19" in diameter. The question:
Can I use my existing false bottom? I'd like to get up and running asap and not have to get a custom false bottom made. This obviously will leave some space around the bottom that's not covered (the sanke is around 15" diameter)--much more than wasn't covered in the sanke.
It seems like I'd still have a lot more surface area than those who successful use manifolds.
Thoughts?
