Has anyone out there in our brewing community tried putting horseradish in their beer? I'm interested in brewing an ale, adding horseradish to spice it up a bit, but I am unsure of where in the brewing process to add it and how much of the wonderful spice should be added. I just want a little kick, and I'd prefer not to be crying after drinking my beer (unless it's just that damn beautiful!)

Any help in this matter would be much appreciated!

Well, both ginger and horseradish are roots, and are spicy - I've seen some threads here about using ginger and you might be able to extrapolate. I think Randy Mosher wrote about using ginger in Radical Brewing.

Is horseradish bitter, too?

Ginger and horseradish are roots, yes. But quite a bit different is taste!

Go for it!

Yikes! You guys will put anything in your beer. :p

I've got some growing in my garden, but that thought has never crossed my mind.

I read somewhere that German brewers used horseradish in some of their concoctions. As a huge horseradish fan (however usually accompanied by prime rib), I thought this might be fun to try.
