DME in place of priming sugar?

So I have had it with the standard priming sugar that seems to come with most extract kits. In my mind they leave a strange aftertaste and too much carb as opposed to the beer I've kegged and carbed with friends. Unfortunately I have to carb in bottles due to my lack if space and funds. One of...

Oak chips. What should i do?

I was just thinking cheap would be better in terms of how when you cook with alcohol, you tend to not use the goo stuff. But I guess since I'm technically not cooking the scotch, a top shelf one should be the way to go. Thanks again for all the advice! I have half a bottle of Macallan 12 that...

Oak chips. What should i do?

The thought of soaking in scotch did occur to me, I may have to grab a cheapish bottle and go that route!

Oak chips. What should i do?

Thanks for the advice! I will be sure to sample often and I'll plan on only leaving them in for a week.

Oak chips. What should i do?

So I went to the local homebrew shop today to buy some yeast for an esb I am making today. I saw a bag of oak chips and couldnt resist. I basically have two questions. First, how do I sanitize the oak before I put it in the secondary fermenter? Would soaking it in burbon work or should I soak in...

    HBC 342 hops

Very nice. Looks like I will be placing an order soon! The ipa I had was super light. On appearances it looked more like a kolsch. Not sure if I want to go that route or darken it up a bit

    HBC 342 hops

Have to revitalize this thread. I just had an ipa brewed at Mad Fox Brewery in Falls Church, Va. They used this hop exclusively and it was delicious. Grapefruit flavors but not too hash and not too much bite, quite smooth. And I'll be damned if there's not a watermelon smell to this beer! I was...

Hop question for a created recipie

Now I have a follow up because of some hops I managed I acquire. My lhbs has quite a stockpile of citra hops so I picked up 4oz of them. Given the hops that I have on stock now (1oz centennial, 2oz cascade, 4oz citra), anyone have any suggestions for an ipa? I was thinkin: 1oz centennial for 60...

Hop question for a created recipie

Yeah I know what you mean. I totally meant 10 min left and 5 min left, I just wrote that crap in all ass backwards. Would there be a better bittering hop rather than centennial? I love the cascade flavor and aroma

Hop question for a created recipie

The question was my hop combo. I was planning on using 1oz of centennial for bittering, .5oz of cascade at 50min, .5oz of cascade at 55min and the. 1oz of cascade to dry hop in secondary. My question is does centennial work well with cascade? If no, what wold be a good bittering option if I...

Hop question for a created recipie

First of all, thanks in advance for anyone who helps me out with this. I'm building an ipa recipe and I had a question about the hop selection I was going to use. Apart from some specialty grains I have yet to determine, I was going to use 6lbs of Pilsen lme and 1lbs of briess Pilsen lme.

    Kits: brewers best?

I made the bb cream ale kit with one slight change. I brewed it according to the kit directions, primary fermented for 2 weeks, secondary for one week, then did one additional week in the secondary with some whole cascade hops to dry hop. Gave it a beautiful aroma and was a huge success.

Trying to make a spiced up blonde ale

I had a blonde with lavender out of a brewery near Baltimore. It was one of the more unique flavors I've had in a beer. Subtle, but definitely odd. It was quite polarizing; some of my buddies loved it, others thought it reminded them of laundry detergent :p I wouldn't have the slightest idea how...

    Late addition malt extract question

Hi All, I am planning on brewing a Brewers Best European Bock kit this weekend and was looking to make a few tweaks. I have read on several threads here that saving some of the malt extract and adding it during the last 15 minutes of the boil is a way to improve the overall quality of your...

    Dry hopping time question

I was reading a thread which talked about a grassy taste after dry hopping for two weeks. But it seemed that the grassy/vegetable taste could have been caused by something else. I will plan on dropping them in for the last week. Thanks everyone for the advice!

    Dry hopping time question

I'm planning on brewing a pale ale this weekend and was considering attempting a dry hop in the secondary fermentor. I'm fairly new to all this, so I was wondering what would be a good length of time to dry hop with one ounce of whole cascade? The guys at my home brew store suggested racking on...
