Long shot: anyone in Ithaca, NY w/ a grain mill?

Long story short: I've got some unmilled grains and an unforgiving schedule (trying to squeeze in one last batch before moving). The mill is broken at my LHBS (ICC), which I didn't learn until after I bought the stuff. There's a bottle of a decent Summit/Columbus IPA in it for whoever...

Partially cover to maintain boil? No DMS problems?

I just bought this great 6 gallon pot for my 3 gallon batches. This evening I've been experimenting to see how long it takes to get to boil on my gas stove and what the evaporation rate is. While it achieves boil on my stove pretty well (30 minutes), once I take the lid off it cools a bit and...

    Taste of Golden Promise

Just opened a bottle of a Golden Promise/Northern Brewer smash I made a month and a half ago. FG is 1.013. Is it just me or does the color not seem to fit the flavor of this malt? It's looks like it would be boring (like a light American lager), but it tastes super clean with a fantastic bit...

    Mash paddle with glue

Just bought a wood mixing paddle from a food supply store. While I was in the process of drilling a few holes, I noticed that it's glued together. Before I go any further, should I be worried about the glue having a negative affect on the mash? (I know it's easier just get one piece of wood from...

    Bottle conditioning vs secondary

I've heard that if you bottle early, instead of bulk conditioning, each bottle could condition differently since each one is an environment unto itself. Any truth in that?

    Yeast for 1 Gallon Batch

Quick question: when you guys do this are you just closing the leftover packet with a clip and putting it in the fridge until your next 1g batch?

    Maris Otter SMaSH Suggestions

I'd do fuggles, too, with S-04. Also: Use at least 2.5 lbs, and do a 90 minute boil. A few months ago, I did a MO EKG smash with a 90 minute boil, and the malt flavor was much deeper and more complex than a 60 minute MO cascade smash I did more recently. Both were one gallon batches and very...

    1-Gallon Brewers UNITE!

I've been doing one gallon AG batches for about 6 months now (after a year of extract stuff with friends), and it's great for a number of reasons: 1. Variety 2. Educational (series of smash brews) 3. Honing a method that I can--when I have the dough--scale up to larger batches with bigger and...

One bottle bomb--should I be worried about others?

I took two readings: post boil and after 4+ weeks in primary. It had to have bottomed out. From what you're telling me, it must have been the bottle.

One bottle bomb--should I be worried about others?

We bottled in an outside laundry room, so probably low 60s. But they've been conditioning inside at around 68-70. If I open up another after only one week conditioning, am I going to be able to tell the difference between overcarbed/bomb and just one week carbing?

One bottle bomb--should I be worried about others?

FG was 1.012 from 1.047. I hope it doesn't affect it too much. It tasted great going into bottles. The thing blew up when I was bottling a 7.5% munich/hallertau smash--so I'm consoling myself with a bit of that. I was about to kill my buddy at first (even told him the packet was more than we...

One bottle bomb--should I be worried about others?

It's only been a week at around 70 degrees. If I open any of them now, after only 7 days, they'd all gush, wouldn't they?

One bottle bomb--should I be worried about others?

I had a bottle of northern brewer's patersbier spontaneously go off a while ago. They were bottled about a week ago. As far as I can tell, a buddy of mine (with whom I brewed and bottled the stuff) used the entire .5oz packet of priming sugar that came with the kit. I think that ends up...

Are stouts worth brewing if you dont have nitro?

My 2 cents: Of course. But, to quote a recent Brewing tv episode, if you do want nitro, buy the machine before you get married and have to justify it to someone who probably won't understand. http://www.northernbrewer.com/connect/episode/brewing-tv-episode-55-all-about-stout

    Bottle conditioning/ clarifying

I've got a Belgian pilsner/saaz smash that just finished conditioning at room temperature for about 4 weeks. I tried one after putting it in the fridge for a day or two, and it tastes great (I'm definitely making this one again, but experimenting with different noble hop varieties). The only...

German spalt vs hallertau in patersbier

    *bump* Anyone?

German spalt vs hallertau in patersbier

Hi everyone, I just got Northern Brewer's patersbier extract kit in the mail. The hops according to the recipe are 1 oz Hallertau and .5 oz Saaz for bittering and then .5 oz Saaz for aroma/flavor. For the all grain recipe, Hallertau are replaced with Tradition--so I'm assuming one is a good...

    Primary size--too small?

Thanks for the response. Let me add a third question then: 3. Will all the blow off reduce my total and final volume?

    Primary size--too small?

Hey everyone, I just brewed AHB's Arrogant Bastard extract kit with some friends, and for various reasons and accidents we're using a 5 gallon carboy as a primary (usually works as secondary) to hold a little over 5 gallons. Of course, there is little to no headroom at all in the thing now, but...

    Help!!!

No--I've got a mini biab set-up. It's only my third time brewing this way. I actually overshot my og by a bit: 1.070 from 1.065. Could that have been the longer mash? Per your advice I did 90 min instead of 60.
