    The Dilemma

Thanks for the input. Option B probably makes the most sense for me as my goal is to have hops just at my new place (so I don't have to manage beds in two locations) without losing the maturity of these plants. I will research digging up crowns...seems like it may be a little tricky to do so...

    The Dilemma

I’ve been a renter for years. This being the case, I used my parents backyard to start a hop garden three years ago. Right now, there are two third year Cascades and two third year nuggets along with two second year Centennials and two second year Chinooks in the garden. The plants went...

    growing hops in VA?

Hoping for good things in year two for my cascades and nuggets. This weekend, I’m going to build a new raised bed where I’m going to plant two centennial rhizomes and two chinook. I just got them from freshops this week. Anybody else in the area who also hasn’t planted yet? In general...

    Is this mold?

Thanks for the responses. Maybe this type of clustering is more typical when dry yeast is used? I've been using liquid but switched up to dry for this batch.

    Is this mold?

Yep, picture is from the primary. I probably wouldn't have questioned it too much except my basement experienced some pretty serious flooding earlier this year and it's been pretty damp and musky down there. Also read in "How to Brew" that an oxygenated fermentation can result in mold...i.e...

    Is this mold?

I transferred a 3 gallon batch to a 3 gallon carboy secondary for dry-hopping and noticed these little clusters on top. The batch was in a 5 gallon primary carboy for 14 days. The beer still tastes good. Do you think it's mold? If so, what to do? Go ahead and bottle?

    Ugh, low OG.

So, I rebrewed this recipe last night but went down to 3.5 gallons to make up for lack of equipment space. This allowed more room for stirring the mash and looser grains in the mash. I also increased mash temp from 150-154 and had more consistent crush. Got my efficiency up to 67%, which...

    growing hops in VA?

I took my first shot at growing this year. I planted 2 Cascade and 2 Nugget rhizomes at my folks' garden in Leesburg this last April and had good first-year yields for all four plants. About 1.5 lbs of wet hops per plant, 6 lbs. total. I harvested all cones in late August/early September...

    Ugh, low OG.

Yeah, seems like taking a pre-top off wort sample and then calculating the dillution would give a more accurate reading. Will do on the second bit of advice.:mug:

    Ugh, low OG.

If only it were still lawnmower season. Thanks for the info, that makes sense. When you say use any extra bag, you're saying split the grain and half and do two mashes so that there's more room to stir?

    Ugh, low OG.

Yooper - your point may have nailed it. I used a 24" x 36" nylon grain bag in a 5 gallon stockpot and the grain was packed in pretty tightly. I also did not stir that much because I did not want to lose my mash temp.

    Ugh, low OG.

Checked the hydrometer and it's working. OG reading was taken at 72-75 degrees. I mixed the wort with the top-off water, but maybe not that thoroughly. Still, sample was taken with a beer thief which probably drew it from at least halfway down the column.

Rookie brewer here from Va. First, there’s unbelievable amount of knowledge here, so hats off to this place and the people that post here. It's helped me through my first ten or so batches and I've learned some patience...alas, I've gone into freak out mode after attempting my first 5 gallon...
