4-quart yeast starter for 5-gallon lager?

Yeastcalc.com Do a stepped starter. Do the first step, cold crash overnight, decant, add the second step of wort, let it finish, cold crash, decant, pitch. That way you only need one flask, a sauce pan to boil the second step, and maybe a funnel to help pour it in to the flask on top of the...

    What should I brew next?

Brew an old ale! I recently bottled my version of the 11-11-11 old ale that is floating around here. Turned out great. Maybe split the batch and do half with brett in secondary? Kind of wish I had done that but I ended up keeping it all clean. Another option would be a hoppy saison with...

Adding Second Batch to Chest Freezer

I would just take last weeks batch out and put it somewhere else. It is likely done fermenting at this point and the flavor profile is set. I would still leave it in primary for another week at room temperature so the yeast can clean up a bit.

7.9 Gallon Fermenter lid at AHS

Nice part about the big bung is that you can take gravity samples or even rack without removing the lid. I like my ahs bucket much more than the one I bought locally.

    Help me improve my methods

Beersmith did a great job of calculating my strike temp(171F) and I ended up just a couple degrees over my target(156F). Nothing a bit of ice and stirring couldn't fix. Beersmith specifically says to batch sparge with 3.3gal of 168F water but obviously that is too low to get the temperatures I...

    Help me improve my methods

I think you're right. I questioned what I was doing but figured the first time around I would follow beersmith's directions to the letter and use 3.3gal of 168F water to do a single sparge. Is there a temperature that I don't want to exceed for fear of extracting some unpleasant things from...

    Help me improve my methods

So, yesterday I did my first all-grain brew, and that was my second brew overall. I have a 9gallon kettle, turkey burner, 10gallon home depot mash tun with ss braid, and ale pail style fermenter. My biggest "problem" was low efficiency(63%). It was a rather large grain bill, 17bs for a 5gal...

Cheap & Easy 10 Gallon Rubbermaid MLT Conversion

I am weary of the ss hose clamps after the OP had trouble with them rusting. I checked with my local boating store but none of their ss clamps are small enough for what I need. Have you had any luck with the ss clamps yourself?

Cheap & Easy 10 Gallon Rubbermaid MLT Conversion

I am in the middle of building one of these cooler tuns with the 10 gallon cooler from home depot. I basically built it to match the original instructions. I have a couple quick questions that I wasn't able to locate the answers to in the 187 pages of this epic thread. Will zipties work to...

Trying to figure out my second brew. FBS clone. Steeping flaked oats?

So, I am just over a week in to fermenting my first brew. I did the Blind Pig clone from Morebeer. I did a full boil and hit my OG just fine and think I am on track to have a good brew. My only concern so far is my fermentation temperature is a little lower than I would like at about 65f. It is...
