    Fix low effiency after the fact?

    I am a noob, but I've found that adding 1 lb. brown sugar at the end of the boil[10 min] will add about .o06 points to your grav.you should check the grav before and after you boil. I don't know if this is frowned upon in the homebrew community[adding sugar].

    I use 3/4 cup corn sugar for every 5 gal. after a week in bottles pale ales are fine. brown ales and stouts are low or almost flat.what gives?

    consistency issues is it the grain..

    i buy the grain crushed fromthe LHBS,i didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. i have noticed a trend with my past brew logs.i get better eff. on all dark beers. i do stir the top of the grain bed when i sparge. thanks dw.

    thanks gdog this spigot has bottled about 15 batches.after viewing that link i'm going to buy a new one asap.how often do you switch spigots? dw.

    I use a 5 gal bucket w/spigot and rubber tube for bottling. Basically 4 parts, I break em down rinse in hot water then star san bath.unionrdr posted info as to why i dont notice the off flavor until after bttl.I think they're right,and I think the reason I havent tasted the Off flavor every time...

    thank you unionrdr for the info.i think i can make it thru the winter when it cools but will look into better temp control in spring. why do you think the flavor only asserts itself after bottling?

    I too have had an off flavor apear after bottling.It doesn't happen with every batch,But I've noticed it with pellet and whole hops so I don't think its hop related.To me its a fermentation temp issue because the best way I can describe the flavor is stale yeast[not sour] .Ive used wyeast and...

    thanks for the reply.I have one more question.whats the best way to determine how much water to sparge with.say my mash volume is 4 gal.the grain weight 15 lbs.I normally use 4.5 gal to sparge with,but i don't know if i can or should use more. my wert gravity is usually lower than i feel it...

    when you sparge for 90 min. vs 60 min. do you use more water, or a slower flow?
