Why did my recipe make way more wort than it was supposed to?

The grain was milled at my local home brew store. Grain temp was 67.8 avg. Strike water was 174.6 sparge was 175. 9.5 lbs grain. Boil for 80 minutes, supposed to yield 5.01 gallons. Gravity reading was 1.036, seemed low.

Why did my recipe make way more wort than it was supposed to?

Actually I boiled it for 80 minutes, per recipe. it was not a vigorous boil, but it was boiling. The first mash runoff was coming out clean out of my mash tun, and the grain was still wet in the mash tun, after both the first runoff and the sparge, but I still ended up with A lot more than 5...

Why did my recipe make way more wort than it was supposed to?

Lol! :) Shoot, I always think I'm being thorough, and then I get asked for more info. Okay, so there was one part of my process when I raised my hands over the mash tun and asked God to multiply the water and the grain... No jk jk. I guess I'll go back and check my process. Thanks for all the...

Why did my recipe make way more wort than it was supposed to?

Hey all, so my first home brew ever and also first all grain went great! Built a lot of the stuff myself, and it was so much fun! Anyway, my recipe called for 11.88 quarts for the mash and then 5 gallons of sparge. This gave me 8 gallons of wort. I had to throw 3 gallons away :( just to get...

First Homebrew Ever - Yeast Starter Questions

Thanks for all the help everybody! :) And as to decanting, I meant it in the sense that even though my mini-wort was cloudy, there was still yeast on the bottom (almost sandy looking) and I poured off the cloudy liquid leaving a fine yeast like paste on the bottom. Also, once I cold crash it...

First Homebrew Ever - Yeast Starter Questions

Yes, the mini wort was cloudy when I decanted. And next time I should let the wort chill overnight huh... Well shoot heck and darn :) now I know. Thanks for the information. Also, on a side note, since my yeast was in a tube rather than a pouch, and only had a cap and ring seal, when I sanitized...

First Homebrew Ever - Yeast Starter Questions

So I made only a pint of wort (pint of water, 1/2 cup DME, 1/4 tsp yeast nutrient, 10 minute boil) and pitched my yeast (1 tube) into that. And I did try to put the original starter into the fridge for 20 minutes before I poured most of the liquid off, trying to leave as much yeast as possible...

First Homebrew Ever - Yeast Starter Questions

Let me preface this post by saying, RDWHAHB. I fully support and am behind this way of life. Okay, now that's out of the way. So I did my first homebrew ever today, and I made a yeast starter for it and then pitched my yeast into a second starter, and on each occasion, I followed the method...

    New guy from MI

Thanks for the advice jeffencourt. I was at the their new Ann Arbor location today talking to them all about mash tuns and chillers. Holy cow, I wanted to buy it all! Sadly, I have to make most of my equipment myself on account of the fact that I'm a broke college student. But that might be half...

    New guy from MI

Hey everyone! My story is similar to the op, except for the wife and friends getting me a kit, so I guess not really similar at all, but I just got a kit from northern brewers and I'm going to attempt my first brew on Sunday. So many questions! Anyway, thanks for the great site.
