How long before using second runnings?

I brewed a RIS on Sunday 2/5 and had got about 4 gallons of 1.050 runnings in a bucket. It was late and I decided to boil it and make a lower gravity beer the next day. I got sick and haven't had a chance to do anything with it. It has been in a sealed plastic bucket in my garage with temps...

How many people use a Keggle for HLT/HERMS for 10gallon batches?

I just finished adding a Beautiful HERMS coil to my HLT keggle. A buddy says it won't be enough volume for bigger beers. What did I forget? I normally do ten gallons batch sparge and heat the sparge water during the mash. So, I guess what my friend is saying is that I need the whole volume...

How to calculate potential Specific Gravity of Fermentables

Today I did another ten gallon batch of my Holiday Ginger Snap Ale. I use two boxes of crushed gingersnap cookies in the mash and I need to figure out the potential Specific Gravity of the cookies so I can calculate an estimated OG reading for my BeerSmith recipe. I did get an actual measured OG...

How to port electrical wires into a freezer fermentation chamber?

I've been using a small chest freezer and Ranco controller. I also have an electric heat source and may add a fan later. I don't like hanging the cords over the ledge under the lid as it prevents the lid from sealing well. What is a good way to port the wires into the box?

Adding Muntons on Day 2 of fermentation with WYEAST 1056

I started fermentation yesterday with a smack pack of WYEAST 1056 American Ale yeast. I have had the smack pack for about 60 days in the refrigerator. It was puffed out but the inner nutrient pack was not broken. A friend told me to cut the smack pack open and scoop out the yeast, adding the...

Bottled 12 bombers last night with new Beergun!

I got a beergun for Christmas and last night I bottled 12 22oz bombers using it connected to my kegging manifold in the fridge. It took me three bottles to get the hang of how to fill while leaving just a small head space. After the first three I had the process down. What a great way to bottle!

How do I use my new Boilermaker?

My family bought me a new Blichmann 10Gal Boilermaker for Christmas. I might add that it is an awesome piece of stainless steel. The LHBS sent them home with a false bottom as well but I don't have any use for that right now. Also, I'm not sure of the purpose of the dip tube. Can someone explain...

Is a conical worth the $$$ at this stage?

I just started brewing with two batches under my belt. both of those were extract brews with some special grains seeped into the wort. I plan to begin buying some better equipment for brewing, for example I'd like to procure a large brew kettle so I can do a full five gallon boil. Additionally...

Kegged my first brew - sample tasted weak

I kegged my first beer last night, a Wheat beer that is supposed to be a bit like Blue Moon. Starting gravity was 1.050 corrected and final was 1.009 corrected. When I tasted the sample last night it was very week tasting and had a slight odd aftertaste. It was racked into a secondary two...

    Wit Bear fermentation temp dropped

We went away for the weekend during day 6-8 of my first batch of wheat beer. When I left the fermentation temperature was consistently around 70 to 72 degrees. When I arrived home today the temp was at 64 and the bucket felt cool to touch. Will this cause a problem with the continuation of...

How to remove an airlock without dumping water into my beer?

I want to remove the airlock to change out the water for a Starsan or Vodka fill. I filled it up last night with regular bottled water and now want to change it out for the mentioned. However, if I pull it out the pressure seems to want to suck the water back into the pail.
