    Add HOPSSSS????

If I use whole cat or plugs, I usually rack to a secondary first to get the brew off the yeast. On a side note, Simcoe is a great late addition hop for cat beers. Anyone ever try a wet-cat beer?

The stupidest comment on your beer

A girl at a party asked me what the stuff at the bottom of the bottle was. I told her it was yeast, and her eyes got wide. She said (practically mid-sip), "Oh my god! Am I gonna get a yeast infection from drinking this?!" I busted up laughing, took her glass, and said yes. EDIT: Just saw...

    BIAB size question

As I understand it, anywhere from 1-2 qt./lb. works just fine, but most homebrewers use around 1.25-1.5 qt./lb. I agree that 16 lbs. of grain for BIAB in a 7.5 gallon pot is alot, but if you thicken up the mash to 1.25 qt./lb then you can add 19.2 pounds of grain to 6 gallons of water. At 34...

    I love belgians!

Sessionable Belgians are some of my favorite beers. Here's what started out as a clone of Russian River's 'Redemption', but sort of evolved based on what was at my LHBS. Overall, this beer is good after about two weeks in the bottle, but it's best after at least four. It tastes sort of like a...

    BIAB size question

I agree with above. I've done a few BIAB in a 7.5 gallon pot, and (especially with bigger beers) it's a bit tight even during the mash if you try to do it with the full pre-boil volume. That being said, I managed to squeeze about 13 lbs. of grain into the pot without a problem. My only issue...

    Thanksgiving Cranberry Bread Ale

Every year my mom bakes cranberry bread for Thanksgiving, but I can't make it home for the holiday this year. I decided to brew a slice of home, and this is what I came up with. Sorry if the numbers (IBU, SRM, etc.) are a little off. I'm still figuring out Beersmith. :drunk: Any feedback is...

You might be a beer nerd when...

So, for example, tonight I was completely out of homebrew (tragedy, I know) but I had some grain alcohol lying around and I decided to make a mixed drink. I took about 2 oz. of the grain alcohol and threw in some Mt. Hood pellets from the freezer in addition to some DME and a little distilled...

    Waste

I haven't brewed that many batches, so I am hardly an expert, but I've cold crashed once and I hardly noticed a difference in the yeast cake. It was indeed a bit harder, but not by much. I'd rather spend the extra couple bucks to throw more than 5 gallons in the fermenter and not worry about...

    Taste of Beer Before Bottling

Alot of guys will leave their brews in primary for at least a month. Personally, I'm not that patient, so I usually bottle after 2-3 weeks. For me it really depends on the gravity and the type of beer, though. I'll take a gravity reading around a week after I pitch just to see/taste how the...

    cooling wort question

I don't want to carry 50 pounds of boiling wort to my bathtub, so I invested in an immersion chiller. To help keep the water going through the chiller cool, I fill a bucket with alot of ice, some salt, and water into which I coil the bit of hose (probably a little over three feet) that goes...

    Waste

Are you keeping all of your brews in the primary for a month? I would love to get more beer out of the fermenter if this is a viable solution, I just don't think I can wait that long :cross:.

    +1

    Waste

What did you brew? In my little bit of experience, I have lost almost 3/4-1 gallon to trub/settled hops on an IPA. That being said, I don't use hop bags or secondaries so alot of extra junk ends up at the bottom of the fermenter. Even on my last brew (Belgian Single), I left behind maybe...

    New homebrewer in NYC.

Hi everyone! First off, I'd like to thank everyone on the forum for making this place such a vast source of good information and beer conversation. I have loved beer since I was *cough* 21, but I didn't become an enthusiast/geek until about 6 months ago when a friend back in my CA hometown...
