Lalvin 71b-1122 Yeast, you're personal experiences.

NibblesNM...resurrecting a 4 year old post here...I am VERY interested in a proven, tasty, pineapple coconut melomel recipe. Any chance you can post yours? Thanks!

American Pale Ale Coldwater 420 - Special Pale Ale

Fellas...have a freezer full of homegrown cascade and this recipe was next in line. However, local homebrew supply store doesn't carry caraaroma. What can/should a dude substitute? Some sort of mid-range crystal? Charts say c120 but that seems excessive...thoughts?

Can aphids affect overall bitterness of homegrown hops?

Question to the masses. I've got a three year old chinook plant, and a two year old cascade. They produced a veritable crapload of hops this year...but along with the crop came TONS of aphids. It looked like a tidal-wave of microscopic green bug-bodies as I dried the cones in the garage. They...

Strange yeast behavior. Is US-05 getting weird on you?

I'll chime in too...maybe it's coincidence, maybe not. As I type I'm sipping an IPA I fermented with US-05 in November. It took two days for fermentation to begin, and another 8 for it to complete (at day #9 I still had one bubble per second out of the airlock). I thought I screwed up the batch...

Does rehydrating dried yeast increase lag time?

just pulled the empty US-05 packet from the trash. i'm assuming the bottom line of numbers is the expiration date...04...2015. the top line reads 87384...120...0704.

Does rehydrating dried yeast increase lag time?

hooray for live yeasties. 18 hours post-pitch in the porter and there was the slightest layer of krausen. now 24 hours in, a solid 1/2 inch layer and plenty of bubbles in the blow-off bucket. your analogy is spot-on. patience also plays a big role, and i don't have much of that when it comes to...

Does rehydrating dried yeast increase lag time?

Glad to see this post this morning cause I just started wondering the same thing. I sprinkled DRY for the last couple years, aerated with a venturi tube, and didn't really bother controlling the fermentation temperature (beyond the thermostat in the closet set at 65). Never had much of an...

    stc-1000 questions

acafro, forgive me for being thick...i'm not an electrician (nor do i play one on TV), but if the STC-1000 is, in fact, only rated to 10 amps, and a 16GA extension cord to 13 amps, wouldn't the OP be perfectly fine building his controller with wire from a 16GA extension cord??? Cause it seems to...

    stc-1000 questions

Just built mine, and used 16GA throughout. According to the label on my chest freezer, it only draws 5 amps, so I figure 16GA ought to cover it. Haven't actually tested it with a full load yet though. Might just add a 10 amp inline fuse just as a precaution. And for what it's worth, check out...

    Porter W/Oak Cubes & Bourbon?

i just brewed a bourbon barrel porter recipe from northern brewer...fermented in the primary for 10 days, then racked to a secondary on top of 2 oz of oak cubes and 16 oz makers mark bourbon and let it sit about three more weeks. bottled that hog a couple days ago and it tasted pretty dang good.

Secondary stratification w/ a bourbon barrel porter?

Hey Yoop, how much would the 16 oz of bourbon alter the FG? I'm guessing I should have taken a reading on the porter BEFORE adding the bourbon, but I neglected to do so.

Secondary stratification w/ a bourbon barrel porter?

Thanks Yoop...good to know. Was afraid I may have two cases of bottle-bombs conditioning in the spare bedroom.

Secondary stratification w/ a bourbon barrel porter?

So I'm a bit perplexed. Brewed up an AG version of Northern Brewers "Bourbon Barrel Porter". Held her steady at a 153 degrees through an hour mash, and hit my target OG of 1.065, with 5 gallons into the primary. Pitched one packet of Danstar Windsor Ale yeast and over the next 2.5 days witnessed...

    Dryhopping in primary or secondary?

I dry hop in the primary after all visible fermentation has stopped (like at the 14 day mark). Then I let the hops sit in there for a week, then transfer to secondary for a couple more weeks, then bottle. Always produces a nice clear, clean beer. Last time I dry hopped in the secondary I ended...

    Wee Heavy Strong Scotch Ale

so here's the deal....six weeks in the bottle at 75 degrees and still VERY minimal carbonation. i've never had an issue with carbing until now. this hog weighed in heavy at 1.085 and finished at 1.016 (permo....spot-on call a few posts back), for an ABV of 9.1%. do you think i just need to give...

Kettlehouse Cold Smoke Scotch Ale Recipe?

I'm real curious how it turns out too...I tried the original recipe awhile back and it didn't come out so good. Anxious to hear how the beefed-up version tastes. That Coldsmoke has got to be one of my favorite MT brews...

New to batch sparge and stainless braid, need help!

lakedawgs...i had used one of those stainless steel braids for probably a dozen or so batches. was working fine, but towards the end of it's life it seemed to stretch out and finally got plugged up like yours did (and i couldn't keep it on the bottom either, even with a brass plug in the end)...

American Porter Bee Cave Brewery Robust Porter

Figured I'd better add my two cents here....just tasted my first bottle last night. Been carbing for just over two weeks. It's still slightly under-carbed, so I might swirl the bottles and let it sit a couple more weeks. What concerns me is the "watery" mouth-feel and aftertaste (I was expecting...

    Is this possible??!

Yeah buddy I have one of those big burners too and STILL have trouble managing my evap. Made a double IPA recently that started out with 7+ gallons and ended up with only a little more than 4.5 in fermenter. Been trying to control flame a bit more...and keep an eye on wort level in the kettle...
