What's mash-out in BIAB and what is it for? Do we need it at all?

That makes sense. Thanks for the help. I guess I will probably have to go the sparge for some of it, because I don't think I can fit 7 gallons and 10 lbs in an 8 gallon kettle. I'll probably try something like 5.5 gallons and then sparge in another 2 gallons at the end.

    Brewing big beers via BIAB...

This is what I've typically done to. I will go to 10 lbs of actual grain (12 at the most) and use DME to get to the OG I need. Typically not more than 2-3lbs of DME unless it is something really big.

What's mash-out in BIAB and what is it for? Do we need it at all?

If you guys don't mash out what is your quart to pounds of grain ratio? Is it higher or do you just fill to 6.5 gallons after the mash?

    Racking onto a yeast cake

well technically I poked it when I pulled beer to test the gravity. Really confused, the only time I have ever seen anything like that happen was with Lager Yeast.

    Racking onto a yeast cake

Update, so when I got home I did a hydrometer reading and it came in around 1.002. I have absolutely no idea how that happened. I did not ever seen any Krausen and I never saw air coming out of the airlock. The OG was 1.062. 1.002 seems very low, I was looking to hit around 1.010.

    Racking onto a yeast cake

Perfect. Thanks everyone. I will check the gravity tonight and if there is little to no change I will go ahead and pitch the extra packet.

    Racking onto a yeast cake

racked at 75, I typically go between 70-75. Is that too high?

    Racking onto a yeast cake

This is the second time I have racked onto a yeast cake. I typically do this to get faster fermentation and a way to use the yeast twice, especially with a similar style. I brewed an APA first, pitched the yeast US-5 and it was actually vigorously fermenting within about 12 hours. Racked...

    CO2 In Connection

Thank you so much for the help. This type of stuff can be very intimidating for a noob. Thanks for taking time out of your day to answer questions for me and others like me!

    CO2 In Connection

Makes sense and was thinking the same thing. Thank you very much for your help. In the meantime do you think I will lose a ton of CO2? I will probably have to order it online because I typically work until 6ish PM and don't have the time to get to the LHBS which is about 20 miles away.

    CO2 In Connection

Hi All, I am having trouble getting my CO2 in flush with my in post. After I clicked it into place I sprayed it lightly with warm water and soap and there is apparently CO2 coming out the bottom of the connection as one fairly large bubble will grow every 15 seconds or so. My keg was set to 30...

    Regulator leaking

Maybe I'm just not cut out for this keg thing. Any help is much appreciated. I just bought a brand new 2 tap regulator from midwest supplies and hooked it up to my CO2. I tightened the connection to the CO2 tank and placed the plastic ring inside. I slightly turn on the CO2 and it blows right...

    Kegerator question

Wow, that is a great idea and makes perfect sense. I'll report back, but don't see why that shouldn't work. Thanks Banshee!

    Kegerator question

I have hose clamps. I can only get the coupler about a centimeter into the tubing, so the clamps would be about useless unless I can get a deeper connection. Do you have any ideas as to how the stretch the tubing out so I can get a deeper connection? I tried sticking pliers in there and...

    Kegerator question

Yes that is pretty much my exact coupler. I cut the hose and tried to attach it. The hose will not fully fit around the coupler. It hangs off and I'm fairly certain that once I add pressure it will pop right off.

    Kegerator question

This is probably a stupid question, but I'm hoping someone can answer it. My tap tower came with two female pieces on the tubing so you could easily attach to the coupler. The only issue is both female pieces are designed for standard keg couplers and I want to use it for homebrew. So my...

  18. M

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Just finished 5 gallons of Yooper's Pale Ale. I'm excited to see how it turns out, we hit pretty much everything perfectly, so here's hoping for the best.

    What are you drinking now?

80 acre by Boulevard. It's interesting it is a hoppy wheat beer.

American Pale Ale Da Yooper's House Pale Ale

thanks for this recipe Yooper, I am going to try it this weekend. Quick question and just about anyone here can probably answer this. In my Beersmith it has the calculated final gravity as 1.015, which to me seems a bit high with an original gravity around 1.060. How is it calculating this...
