    Dissolving sugar

I will be making a triple tomorrow, and I want to add the sugar after the wort has almost fermented out. This batch requires a lot of sugar, 4.6 lbs, but I don't want to add a lot of fluid if I can help it. How small a quantity of water can I get the sugar to dissolve into? What's your technique?

    March pump & hops

I have been using a Jamil-style whirlpool chiller & a pump to recirculate my wort. I use whole hops, so I have a screen to filter them out. Lately, I have been having problems with break material and hop debris plugging my screen. I have been thinking about switching to pellet hops and...

    Keezer and collar

I scored a chest freezer from Craigslist that is over 6 feet long. It is tall enough to user for kegs as is, but I don't want to drill through the sides, so I am making a wooden collar for it for the faucets & such to pass though. I foresee wanting to remove the collar in the future and...

    The Ventmatic faucet people

Does anybody have the contact info for Ventmatic? I've tried googling, but I only find those who sell the product, and those who talk about it, not the company itself. I want to email them a question.

How often do you calibrate your pH meter?

I have never really trusted the pH meter that I recently purchased, so I tend to go through the calibration fluids awful fast. How often should it need calibrating? How often do you calibrate yours? BTW, I use this one: http://morebeer.com/view_product/7015/102225

    Info on reverse osmosis filters

I am getting very tired of running to the store with a bazillion water jugs to refill at their RO machine. I am really starting to want to just get my own filter and save the run around time. Trouble is, I don't know where to start. My water has way too much magnesium and bicarbonate; these are...

    What about this carboy cleaner?

Has anybody tried one of these? http://morebeer.com/view_product/15974/ A bit pricey, perhaps, but I am sick & tired of half effective bent brushes. Does it work well? What material is used?

    Grain mills, rollers, & RPMs

I am currently working on a home made grain mill. The rollers are 4 3/8" diameter & 6" long. I will be driving it with a 3/4 hp motor, but could up that to a 1 hp if need be. The drive sheaves that I can find at McMaster Carr will give me about 400 rpm. Does anybody have any idea if this will be...

How cold can you lager/cold condition?

I have a stairway leading from the outdoors into my basement. The stairwell is covered by steel doors. Right now, when the temps outside are in the single digits, it is 26 degrees in the stairwell. Most of the time, it is close to but above freezing. How cold can kegs/carboys full of beer get...

How much vortex on a stir plate?

I am currently playing around with a homemade stirplate. I've been trying different spacings of 3/8" rare earth magnets using double sided tape on a fan. The problem is that the stir bar gets thrown too easily. I can get a vortex that extends down to 1/2" to 3/4" and be fairly stable, but if I...

    Adding a pilot light

The recent article in BYO magazine on building a brewery stand (Brutus 10, I think they called it) has me contemplating adding an automated recirculation temp control to a keggle in my system for a mash tun. The author of that article uses a low-pressure propane system, and made a pilot light by...

    Greetings form Grand Rapids, MI

Hello fellow beer lovers. Unlike many who post here, I am not new to homebrewing, although I almost feel like I am. I used to brew all the time. I started with the “add-a-gob-of-sugar-recipe-on-the-can” nonsense in the 70’s, worked my way up through extract and into all grain batches. At my old...
