possible to chill AG without wort chiller?

Wouldn't that "no chill method" keep all the cold haze proteins? I thought the idea of cooling down the wort quickly was to get the 'cold break' and make the proteins that cause chill haze to settle out of the beer.

    Books?

What books related to brewing would you guys suggest to read? The only book I've read so far is "How to Brew" by John Palmer and was hoping to start reading another one soon. I am not necessarily looking for another beginning brewer book but would definitely love to read something on...

    Batch Sparge Volume question

Hey guys, sorry I haven't read the thread in a couple days, but thanks for all the help. Things are starting to make more sense in my head but I don't think it will click until I actually try to put all this info into practice and actually attempt an all grain brew. I think that I was confusing...

    Batch Sparge Volume question

Ok, I think this is starting to make since to me as long as my next question turns out to be correct. Is it normal to have less than your preboil volume after you are done sparging? Do you use just plain water to make up for whats left? This would also assume that your first runnings + the...

    Batch Sparge Volume question

Thanks for the calculator, that will come in handy in the future. But for right now I really like to understand everything before I start to use calculators. I noticed you are using 1.25 qts/# for the mash in, what I read suggested a 2x water to grist ratio. Now I'm assuming you've brewed all...

    Batch Sparge Volume question

Hey guys, I am trying to come up with a recipe for a single temperature infusion batch sparge all-grain brew. I've done 5 extract brews already and want to take the next step and attempt all grain brewing. I've been reading the book "How to brew" by John Palmer and so far that is where pretty...

    Hop knowledge base?

Hey guys, I was wondering if any of you knew of some sort of hop knowledge base that gives detailed information on pretty much every hop? I mean right now I pretty much rely on the 1-2 sentences that most homebrewing businesses provide in their catalog. This is adequate but I want...

    honey ale

I don't have a recipe, but I did make a honey weizen, from Midwest Supplies, for my first batch ever. I drank some of the leftover 'beer' when transferring from the primary fermentator to the carboy and it was amazing. I can't even imagine what it will taste like when it is cold and has...

Worst Commercial Beer You've Ever Had?

I'm not even joking here, but my palate cannot take any light beer...at all. For whatever reason I just cannot stomach drinking a light beer; whereas, pretty much everything else (aside from stouts) I've loved.

Inexpensive Wart Chiller Pump Idea to Share

This is slightly off topic and I haven't read the entire thread yet so bare with me. What is considered a good time to cool down 5 gallons worth of wort? My friend and I were able to cool 5 gallons of boiling wort down to 75 degrees in about 8 minutes using nothing but a container filled with...

    Sanitizing a carboy advice

Alright, good idea. I guess putting it in a spray bottle and then spraying it into a carboy will make sanitizing a carboy a lot easier than filling it up with 5+ gallons of water and having to pick it up to drain.

    Sanitizing a carboy advice

Do you put pure star-san into a spray bottle or do you dilute it first?

    First Time Brew

Thanks for the advice man. Now I can sit back and relax instead of worrying about my beer. Quick question though, if the secondary fermentator (Carboy in my case) isn't actually used for the fermentation, what reason is there to put an airlock onto the bung? My friend and I actually brewed a...

    First Time Brew

Hey guys, this is my first time on this site. Anyway, last week I decided to try brewing some beer for the first time in my life. I opted to use an extract kit I got from Midwest Supplies. The instructions were pretty clear and everything went good during the brew. Two days ago I moved the beer...
