    HERMS coil de-naturing enzymes?

I'm just starting to brew with my HERMS coil. I've done a couple of batches constantly recirculating, but pulling the liquid out and returning it to the bottom of the MLT. I need to look up the term "Vorlaufing" I think. I thought maybe I should be returning it to the top of the grain bed...

    Help with design for project

I bought an ultrasonic sensor pretty cheaply (~$10) that I've been wanting to use to sense the water level in my Hot Liquor Tank. It transmits an ultrasound pulse, measures return time, and gives a range reading in feet or meters or something. They're used on robots to range an object in its...

    PID Temp controller

Deweyville, never heard of it but wiki tells me you're almost in Idaho! What's your line of work if you don't mind me asking? How long you been brewing? Thanks for the answer on the SSR btw. When I get time, I want to put pics up of my system. I've been working on it for several years if...

    PID Temp controller

It was the fan. BTW, I have the 40A SSR. Heat sink is installed with thermal grease. Fan needs to blow continuously on heat sink, no problems after that.

    PID Temp controller

I have turned it down during use and I think that might be working. I'll have to check to be sure. However, I have measured close to zero voltage difference between the SSR output terminals, indicating heater on, even though controller voltage measured 0 (actually floating at ~0.5 V). I'm...

    PID Temp controller

Hi, I've got an electric HLT with a 5500 W element being controlled by a cheap little PID (1/16 DIN dual digital) and an Amico 25W SSR. At 5500 W, the current is 25A, 100% of the SSR rating. Now, I previously had a 4000W element, so I had some current head room. The problem I'm having is...

    Recirculating mash

Hi all, I've finished my brewing system - a 10-gallon HERMS with the HE coil in the HLT. My mash tun is plastic 15 gal with several ports, some at the bottom and one on the side near the top. I'm recirculating the mash pulling it out of one bottom port and pumping back into another bottom...

    First Lager Question

I just brewed a Singha malt liquor and it smelled sulfury (rotten eggs) for the first few days. It went away and now smells and tastes pretty good! I did 10 gal but the brew store only had one package of the yeast the recipe called for. They gave me two different kinds that were supposedly...

    Lager lag time

I brewed 10 gal of a Singha malt liquor clone last night. We started brewing at around 1 pm and started two starters at that time. We pitched at room temp (~70F) at around 10 pm. The starters had just started to krausen but were not super active. We aerated the wort by shaking the fermenter...

    Electric HLT thread.

Well, people refer to it as 240 because I think that's the max it can be. Mine measured around 230V. So I have this vintage Omega PID Controller that has a 1 A triac output. I want to use my 12V DC relay (25A 300v) to switch the 4500W element. Any wisdom you can offer me on how to drive the...

    Electric HLT thread.

Can anyone point me to plans for electric HLT using a converted 15 gal keg and 220V is avail as well as piped natural gas. I plan to use gas for boil, electric/electronic control of HL and spathe. No plans yet for heating mash, not in that league yet :-/ Sorry if it's been posted before, I...

I want to make an electric MLT...

That would be cool for the HLT though right? Just having all your mash then sparge water heated automatically to the right temp - and right amount would save a lot of time. I'm constantly sticking the thermometer in there, forgetting it, then having to cool it down. I'm just dying to create...

    Electrical Primer for Brewers

Sorry for double posting my last post, I don't know why there's a "Quick Reply" button and a "Post Reply" button... I'd love to see some designs for the frame and plumbing works. I'll get into the control electronics later. Code RAge: do you know how to automate? RIMS, etc? Thanks

    Electrical Primer for Brewers

Very informative, thank you for the post. I'm new here, but have been brewing for about 18 years. I just rebuilt my basement and have a dedicated little room with a floor drain, stainless sink with sprayer, insulated fermentation box, 220V and gas line (as yet unused). I am very interested in...
