Forced Carbing. What am I doing wrong!

Hi Everyone thanks for the info. I was using carbonation calculators and aimed for 3.0 of carb for my hef. The calculator gave me 35.2psi at 68F which is the average temp in my beer room. From what I understood it didn't matter how long I left it attached to the CO2 tank, at 35 PSI and 68F...

Forced Carbing. What am I doing wrong!

So it could be the serving line. That was the last variable I was considering. I'm gonna pick up a long line and see if that helps. Thanks for the help. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

    Next upgrade?

I'm here in Los Angeles, and my biggest problem is always my beer room is too warm to ferment in, so I have to use a Chest freezer to keep a constant temperature. But its interesting to see no one mentioned using an aquarium heater to keep your fermentation warm. I usually only have to use...

    Question on Stepping up Yeast

Figured out that answer to my question. Saw a link to a different Yeast calculator. http://www.yeastcalc.com/ This calculator lets you enter the starting amount of yeast, and calculates the total you have based on the volume of your starter. Alot of the other yeast calculators just go from...

How Do I Know Whether Reused Yeast is Infected?

I've tasted all my starters and to be honest all of them have tasted bad. (They however do their jobs nicely and ferment my wort to wonderful tastey beer.) When they (the starters) ferment they smell great, however once I cold crash them prior to pitching them, they don't smell as pleasant...

Ummm...how much beer do you think this is?

If that is a Betterboy 6.25gal fermentor that should be around 5.5gal.

    Noob question about yeast starters

    1. Yes. Just make sure everything is clean / sanitized. The more often you open/close the foil lid the higher your chances of getting contaminated. (your better off making a really large starter if you want to pitch some to your wort and save the rest.) 2. Yes. Yeast that have a really low...

Adding LME twice - 2 hot breaks?

Hmm this sounds really interesting. But what about extract recipes that do not require specialty grains?

    Small batch brewing

Craigslist and Yardsales can be your best friend. Also at Walmart & Amazon they sell a 32quart (8gallon) pot by Imusa for about $24-$25. This will allow you to grow with your addiction. The only draw back might be its a pretty big pot so storage can be an issue.

    Is this normal?

Yup everything is fine and normal. Almost all my brews have that ring in some form or another. If you filter out alot of the trub when you poured into your carboy the ring will not be as high. If you got a lot of trub in your fermentor then the ring will be bigger/taller. (atleast that is...

What do you do with the "Starter Beer"?

I was wondering what everyone did with the decanted "Starter Beer"? After they pitched the yeast from the starter. Anyone try to bottle it and drink it? Maybe Mix it in with a different batch of beer to blend it? Feed it to the Alligators in the sewers?

Help handling large volumes of liquid malt extract

My LHBS store sells 6lb LME in white food safe containers that have a screw top lid. They look like the ones found here. I'm at work so not sure what size they are but if I had to get maybe 6in diameter and 10-12in tall. They look a little like these...

GE 5.0 cu. ft. Chest Freezer

I got my 10cu FT chest freezer for $40 on craigslist. It was 6years old and runs like a champ. Keeps all my fermentation at a nice 66F. One day i'll get to trying out a Lager.

    Yeast Starter with Mini-Mash

You could use the extra wort to farm more yeast for future brews. Just pick up 1-2 one gallon growlers, with some rubber stoppers and airlocks. Or you can do the tin foil caps. But when I farm yeast for long term storage I always like to be extra clean, so I use airlocks.

Some questions from a terrible brewer...

Ouch! Sounds like you had a tough brewing sessions. If it makes you feel better I think alot of people here have had the same things go wrong. My personal favorite is my Girlfriend opening a vial of warm Whitelab yeast. Yeast exploded (sprayed) out everywhere in my car. So for the next...

    ruination's 10th anniversery

Awesome!! Going to brew your recipe on Saturday. Hopefully all goes well. Did you end up putting 3.2oz or 4.8oz of hops at flame out?

    Too soon?

I would wait. My very first batch of a red irish ale took a good 6 weeks before it got really well carbonated. Its now 7 months old and one of my best brews so far. If your impatient you can do what I did and get 3-4 more fermentors. I basically have a batch ready to bottle every week now...

    Hello from SoCal

Welcome kraut, Welcome and congrats on your 1st brew. I started in October and tried my first bottle on Xmas. Its now been about 8months and i'm a brewing addict. I just recently started ALL grain using the "BIAB" method. Its just as simple as extract brewing, but takes an additional 2-2.5...

    Fermentation snuck up in me!

This is my process which is similar to yours. Day -2: Create 1.5-2L starter in 1gal Growler (I use Mr.Malty tool and its usually 1.5-2L for my 5Gal batch.) Day 0 (brewday:) -Make an additional 2L starter. -Stick the starter that has fermented out in Fridge for quick 2-3hour Chill...
