    The Orthocooler: a walk-in build.

We've all wished for more space in the frig and we all know why. So, without further ado, here it is, as a work in progress. The feature which makes this different is the procurement of some cheapo insulation from a place which makes styrofoam for insulated concrete forms. They routinely...

My Johnson Controller lost its 56

Seems to still be reading accurately otherwise and the probe passes its resistance test, but when temp rises past 55 to hit 56, the unit reads 57. I think it holds to 57 until the temp actually makes it to 58. I haven't found any other missing numbers from low 50s to low 70s. It's hard to say...

    Screwy regulator? Wrong gas? Overfill?

I got my 5# CO2 cylinder filled this morning. When I got back and hooked it up to the regulator, it read about 1600 psi. The tank still felt cold from filling; it had been 45 minutes or so, but it had been packed for safety in motorcycle luggage and, thus, insulated. Also, it was 7.2# heavier...

    Critique my American brown recipe

This is something I put together this morning to brew soon. Each of the grains appeal to me in this for their own reasons, but maybe the grain bill is too busy at this point, I don't know. Amt Name Type # %/IBU 8 lbs Pale Malt (2 Row) UK (3.0 SRM) Grain 1 69.6 % 1 lbs Barley, Flaked (1.7...

    Ordinary APA design

Due to space considerations, I must choose between a hoppy pale ale and a nice, low-gravity offering, such as ordinary bitter. I like to always have something low gravity on tap and my delicious Reaper's Mild is running out before long. So, how crazy does this look? Type: All Grain Batch...

    Bratwurst Pie

First, grill more bratwurst than you can eat in the next couple of days. With what is left over, make a pie or two. Ingredients: Pie crust 8 oz Monterey Jack 4 oz Pepper Jack 1 medium onion 1 egg 2.5-3 bratwursts Directions: Grate cheese into a mixing bowl. Personally, I prefer a higher...

    Tirana

I just had a nice pilsner smuggled over from Albania, by my friend Nicholas. It was a half liter can and quite nice with dinner. :mug:

WLP800/Wyeast2001 for something other than pilsner?

Since last Thursday, I've been building up some yeast for a Bohemian pilsner. It was a 3.5 month old vial, so the first starter was 900ml. It took a day to show one of those cute, baby krausens, but on day 2 it blew off (at 60 degrees in <1.035 wort). I poured it into about 2 quarts of similar...

diacetyl in an early barleywine tasting

I brewed a 3.5 gallon batch of 1.090 barleywine on December 30. 23 days later, I transferred to a 3 gallon better bottle and, with the extra, bottled 3. I usually bottle down to that last little bit which gets air in it, so I mark that one and drink it early. Friday, I had some friends over and...

    Help with Oatmeal Stout

My favorite oatmeal stout (I'm trying to emulate it) was something I had on tap at a Breckinridge Brewpub. They left years ago with the other Birmingham brewpubs. If anyone has had it, maybe you can give me some pointers. My first attempt was as follows (quantities in pounds): 7 pale ale...

    First all-grain brewing report

I've been lurking around here quite a bit lately soaking up the wisdom and finally did the deed yesterday. I had some snafus (like a leaky mash tun I rebuilt twice in the morning and some poor timing) so it was a 9 to 5 project when it was done. Also, when open ball valves run dry, I seem to...

    Greetings from Alabama

I've been mostly lurking for a while now. I'm a math professor, backpacker, and beer enthusiast. I just finished making my first all-grain batch today. It's an oatmeal stout.
