    Yeast Pack Not Swelling!!

Well I pitched it and the next day it was bubbling away. The packet never did swell so not sure what's up with that. I have had packets that swelled that took longer than that to start bubbling. Thanks for all the replies.

    Yeast Pack Not Swelling!!

Well I pitched it so we will see what happens. The inner pouch was broken. I have never had one take so long. All the others that I have used swelled within 2 hours.

    Yeast Pack Not Swelling!!

The date on the packet is October 2007 so that isn't the problem. It has been over 3 hours since I activated it.

    Yeast Pack Not Swelling!!

I am in the middle of brewing a batch of Oatmeal Stout and my British Ale II yeast pack is not swelling. The little packet inside broke and it has been well over hours and nothing yet. How is this going to affect me? Will it still work or do I need another packet? I cannot get one until...

    Heat Lose in MLT

Hi, I just picked up a used round 10gl Igloo cooler at a yard sale for $7, it is an older one but seems to be in good shape. I tested it to see if it would hold heat want to know if the heat lose is acceptable. I did not preheat it with hot water or anything I just added 175 degree water...

    Dry Hop Sanitizing

I dry hop using pellets only. They usually sink to the bottom and my auto sihpon with the cap on leaves them at the botton. If it picks up little it just settles out in my bottling bucket before I bottle. Once they stayed floating on the top and that was fine also. If they stay on the top I...

    Hot Days=Bad Beer?

I live in Oregon and it has been unusually hot here the last week or so and very hard to keep the temperature down in the house. I have 1 batch in primary just waiting to be racked and 1 batch in secondary waiting to clear up and bottle. Will this high heat have any effect on the taste or...

    Break material effect gravity reading?

I just brewed up a batch and had 2 different gravity readings. The first one was from the top of the carboy and came up as 1.040. Then I took it from the middle of the carboy and got a reading of 1.070! The only thing I can think of is the break material was causing the different reading. Is...

    Use For Spent Grains?

Has anyone ever used their spent grains for garden mulch or some kind of fertilizer? Will they work for that or is there even a good use for them? I live in the city and don't want to just keep putting them in the trash. Thanks

    Problem with weldless bulkhead

I am having the same problem with the same hardware from the same place! The nipple will not let the nut go all the way to the ends of the threads on either end. I am not ready the rig my keggle yet so I am not sure how I am going to fix it, but it seems that what Bobby_M says about the...

    Caramel cream ale?

Cheesefood, Thanks for the reply. If I leave it in secondary for a couple of weeks will it come down some more? There must still be yeast in suspension, isn't that how it carbonates in the bottles when you prime.

    Caramel cream ale?

I brewed this beer (ver. 1) 1 week ago and my SG was 1.054. After being in the primary all week the bubbling had slowed to about 1 every 15 seconds so I thought I would rack to secondary to finish off. My gravity reading was 1.016. I don't remember reading anywhere in this thread what the FG...

    Irish Moss Dilema

Yooper Chick, It was .25oz per gallon, she even wrote it on my package. I buy it in 1oz packages also. I thought it was alot since everything I have seen is about 1 tsp per batch.

    Irish Moss Dilema

The lady at my LHBS told me that I should use 1/4oz PER GALLON, so 1 1/4oz per batch. How will that affect my batch? Sorry to post a question is someone else's thread.

    Non Starting Primary Ferment

That happened to me on my last batch, which was only my 3rd batch. It took over 30 hrs for any activity and I was getting worried. I did not make a starter as I thought that was only for dry yeast. It takes awhile longer for the liquid yeast to propagate enough to get a good ferment going...

    30hrs No Frementation

Thanks for all the replies. As of 5pm Pacific time I have fermentation! JadedDog I thought starters were only for dry yeast? I think in the future I will keep a few packets of dry yeast handy. Is there a recommendation for an all aroud general purpose dry yeast?

    30hrs No Frementation

I put my 3rd batch in primary yesterday and it has not started bubbling yet! I pitched WLP001 at 78 degrees (too high I know). Yeast tube was out of the refridgerator for over 3 hours so it was at room temp. I aerated by splashing through a strainer into primary and stirring and splashing with...

    Hello from Oregon

Hi, I have been getting some great tips from this forum for a couple of weeks now and thought I would get registered. I have brewed 3 batches now and my third just went into primary last night. Fermentation has not started yet and I guess that is why I registered so I could get some advice...
