Looking to trade book "Ambitious Brew" for something else

I just received a copy of "Ambitious Brew: The Story of American Beer" and it turns out I already have it and haven't even read it yet. Is anyone interested in a book trade? I've got most of the common brewing books except for Radical Brewing. I'm interested in most of the classic style...

    Carl Mofield

Has anyone ever heard of Carl Mofield? I hadn't until this afternoon. Here's the story: I'm a member of paperbackswap.com and today I received a copy of The Complete Handbook of Home Brewing by Dave Miller. Inside it had a name stamped and date. The name was Carl Mofield and the date Apr...

    Funk starters

I've had 3 funky starters going now. 1 with roselare blend, 1 with WL belgian sour blend, and 1 with dregs from orval. I'm going to brew up some beers real soon and want to use these after primary fermentation is done. I've basically got 1/2 gal starters from each of the blends and a pint...

    Bugs growing on oak

I'm just getting into brewing some sour beers. I've been trying to dig through as much info as possible and I've got a question I haven't found an answer to yet, so maybe someone here knows. I know brettanomyces will take up residence in oak, but what about the other bugs? Will pediococcus...

    Nhc 2009

I thought there was another thread about NHC 2009 down in Oakland but I couldn't find it. Just found out that the group rate at the main hotel is all sold out. There are still rooms available at the regular rate ($210/night). There is a Courtyard Marriott across the street and I just booked...

    Dirty Jobs and hops

I heard through the hop bine that Mike Rowe and the Dirty Jobs crew were in the Yakima valley last week at a hop farm. So I suspect eventually there will be an episode about it. I haven't watched the show in forever, but I might have to set my DVR to start recording it so I can catch that...

    Hugh Baird Pilsen Malt

Has anyone used Hugh Baird Pilsen malt? I'm getting a sack of it from my LHBS since the Weyermann Pilsener malt that I usually take would take a bit longer to get in since they just received an order from the company they would normally get it from and won't be placing another order for a few...

    Mythbusters

Saw something beer related on mythbusters tonight. They threw a keg on a fire to see if it would explode, and sure enough after about 20 minutes the top ruptured with a big bang. Kind of painful to watch a keg be wasted like this. I wonder if they will try to get their deposit back.

    Occasional aeration in yeast starter

I haven't built a stir plate yet, but just today I was looking for something and came across my old X-10 home automation stuff. I've got an aquarium pump, hepa filter, and airstone already, and in previous batches I would leave the stone in the starter and plug in the pump every few hours for a...

    Leaving Immersion Chiller in kettle

Ok so I'm trying to figure out a new way to filter my hops and my immersion chiller adds a bit of a hassle to the whole situation. But it got me wondering, everything always says to insert the chiller in the pot 15-20 minutes before the end of the boil to sanitize it. Why not have it in from...

    Efficiency and volume question

Brewed my 2nd AG batch today and everything went well and I still need to improve my system a bit, but I have some questions maybe someone can help with. I used beersmith to formulate my recipe and after the first AG I got most of the numbers dialed in (or so I thought). I've got a cooler...

5 gal carboy at ace hardware

I was just up at ace hardware with my wife picking up some canning supplies and right next to all of the supplies were about 5 or 6 5 gal glass carboys for $14.95. I think I saw them at my LHBS for around $20 so its a nice little savings. I'll probably pickup another one or two just to have...
