He has an unbeatable beer selection! Other than that he's a cool guy and some of his items (bottles + sugar) are cheaper than online. As far as grain and yeast he doesn't have the quanity and selection i'd like but he tries.
This will be my last post in this misunderstood thread. I never said extract wasn't good of course it's good the ingredients are premaid? Also I have gotten 3 people I work with to start brewing and yes they do extract. They've made great beer and I tell them! But even when they taste one of...
Not trying to pick a fight to each his own. But the making a cake story pretty much proves my point for me. It's easier and it taste better so I do it. My friend can do it but I can't so I don't. That's exactly what I said about extract. People do it because it's easier and that don't want to...
People who are scared to do AG because they're afraid of failing is what's wrong with the US today. It's also why BMC runs the beer industry. People always want the easy way perfect every time. Extract is a great learning tool, but also a big crutch as well. Comparing your extract to my AG beer...
As Gordon Strong says extract is like making kool-aid. Don't mean to offend but after my first brew I thought there's got to be more and have been AG since. I'm new to craft beer so I try and stick close to recipes but I'll add my flare to it if need be. I've get more original with every batch.
Doing my first lager now and have conflicting info. Fermed mine for 10 days krausen dropped did a 4 day D rest. When I racked it took a gravity reading it had reached FG but had a butter flavor? I'm now leaving the racked beer at room temp for a week to try a cure the remaining "D". Since it's...
Maybe it's just me but I thought sparge water was not to exceed 170? I know you were trying to raise the grain bed temp but when you first pour in all the grains are getting nailed with boiling water. I've just heated to 170 pour in stir 10 min rest then sparge away. Always seem to hit in the...
I agree with hughbrooks. I use walmart spring water and 5.2 to make things easier! Yes I know I can get this and that report on the water but really? Also don't tell me I don't need something because I know bottled water isn't perfect. My beer has never been salty or not what I imagined the...
AHS gave me another bottle of yeast after the first failed to ferment my starter, in hindsight it was probably my fault! No questions asked free O' charge. They also have great shipping and sell grains in ounces not just pounds. +1 on NB having a few more things than AHS but all in all. Also...
+1 on high temps NOT causing "sweet taste". Sweet should come from unfermented wort sugar. High temps should cause rapid fermentation and gas flavors. You have to have a thermometer buy a $1 stick on and go from there.
You can only go by your hydrometer! To me a alcohol taste before bottling is a off flavor not a judge of percentage. What's your gravity now it should give you a idea of alcohol content because you can guess your OG based on starting extracts. I can't see 1% from a fully fermented beer!
Not to be mean but why would you attempt a lager without knowing what "lagering" is? I'm just now doing a lager on my 5th AG. Buy a cheap deep freezer asap!
I never taste my wort. The way I see it the yeast is at least 50% of the flavor so tasting it post boil isn't really telling much. Even my bottling taste is always different then the final beer. Just wait it out and do one taste there's nothing you can do now anyway!
When I stepped up my lager starter I did 2L fully fermed, decanted, 2L more fully termed, decanted, then pitched. After both decants the yeast was crazy within hours. So the whole pitch at high krausen thing isn't necessary IMHO
I've only tried 3 but I think the Blue Moon pumpkin harvest was the better. I really want to like all of DFH's beer but I thnik it's all to high alcohol and over hopped JMHO.Their pumpkin had no real taste except high ABV (7%) just not for me.
I used a Gordon Strong recipe from BYO magazine for my cream ale weeks before I ever tasted a SC. He used rice instead of corn. I used a cream ale yeast instead of american. I tasted it the other day and I think it's spot on with SC except a little less sweetness due to the rice. Good stuff all...
never saw any yeast in the bottles I drunk...interesting. Maybe I'll save some next time I'm up there. Hope you used plenty of corn in your recipe you can really taste it!
It was this year at the age of 33 I tried a "Hefe" cause a friend said I should try a Blue Moon and the waitress said it was the same thing...WRONG! Anyway tasted the Hefe and said wow beer can taste good?! I then got into brewing and have tried dozens of beer styles since. But the fact remains...
