    How long can I boil?

Okay, thanks for all of your help. I think I'll give batch sparging a go tonight... EDIT: :off: The batch sparging worked really well last night. Managed to get about 76% efficiency (I could never get over 70% with fly sparging, even with small beers). Very impressed - much quicker and...

    How long can I boil?

I did my first all grain big beer a few weeks ago (a 5 gal batch of imperial stout). It all went a bit wrong - the OG was 1.071 when it should have been 1.096 :( I am pretty sure I know where I messed up - I don't think I lautered or boiled for long enough. I did all of the calculations with...

    Liquid yeast and the TSA!

That's a good idea - I probably will need the bag as I will have the grain too. I wonder what the screeners will make of that when I check it lol! I will definitely check out the Flying Barrel. I didn't even know they have a shop in Frederick. Thanks!

    Liquid yeast and the TSA!

I was actually thinking of something like this. Thoughts??

    Liquid yeast and the TSA!

Thanks for all of your responses. This is my problem in a nutshell. The nearest store is 45 min away and I am not going to be home at the weekends for the next 6 weeks so I would have to take time off work. Mailing it to myself is not an option too. This is where my problem started :off...

    Liquid yeast and the TSA!

Kind of a weird question but has anyone taken liquid yeast successfully through airport security?! I am staying with the in laws and their LHBS is a load easier to get to than mine. I am wondering if the volume of the starter pack exceeds the 100 ml TSA limit. Also, any thoughts on the yeast...

No mash out - low efficiency

I fly sparged. It's not so much getting hung up on the low efficiency but more getting hung up on having an OG lower than the 1.083 than the recipe said I should get. On the plus side I am getting to use my blow off tube for only the second time plus I did get to see the airlock explode...

No mash out - low efficiency

So are there any advantages of not doing a mash out other than saving 10 - 15 min?

No mash out - low efficiency

I followed the AHS recipe but did put all of the numbers into Beersmith just to be certain. I mashed with 1.25 qt water per lb grain and sparged until I had my boil volume of 6.5 gal. I used about 4.5 to 5 gal when sparging.

No mash out - low efficiency

I did my third all grain brew yesterday (AHS Tripel IPA) and ended up with a disappointingly low mash efficiency (68%) and I am wondering where I might have gone wrong. My previous all grain kits have been from Northern Brewer and they suggest doing a mash out step and I have generally had a...

    Yeast Starter - Urgent Problem!

Thanks for all of your replies. My post was a little misleading in that I am not to concerned about the lack of airlock activity. The main issue is what to do about all of the yeast in solution. The autosiphon idea seems a good approach Sardoman. I will give it a try, and of course the...

    Yeast Starter - Urgent Problem!

I am brewing a big beer today (AHS Tripel IPA) so I thought I should make a starter. Beersmith said that I needed to make a 6 qt starter. The only thing I had to make a starter of this size was my 5 gal carboy. I made it on Wednesday and cold crashed it overnight last night (Friday) in the...

    Degreasing a weldless fitting

I recently got a weldless ball valve for my kettle. I had no problems installing it and the seal appears to be perfectly watertight. However, the fitting is quite greasy, not only from the oil that I used to install it but presumably from whatever was used to manufacture the thing. This means...
