Think i pitched too low...any advice???

I always pitch ale yeast in the mid to upper 50s. Cheers!

Imperial stout slow or not fermenting

That's a big beer. According to yeastcalc you would need almost 300 billion cells to properly ferment that wort. It may take a couple of days to kick in.

Imperial stout slow or not fermenting

At what temperature did you pitch and what was your OG? Did you pitch the right amount of healthy yeast? It's a good idea to make a starter for every batch, but it should be a requirement for any recipe that has "Imperial" in the name.

    Pitch Temp

I pitch my ale yeasts in the high 50s and let it rise into the low 60s, carboy half-submerged in cold water in a dark 65 degree room. My brews always turn out great and with this somewhat controlled fermentation I don't even have to look at it for 2 weeks.

    Newbie burner question

I have the SP10 (short version) and I couldn't be happier with it through 5 AG batches. Make sure your hose it screwed tightly onto the propane tank. I had a few instances where I was getting a very low flame and thought I was running out of fuel, but it turned out that the connector just needed...

How soon can I start 2nd stage

Why bother moving it and risk infection? Are you planning on doing something with it in secondary? If not, your best bet would be to leave it in primary until fermentation is complete, then bottle or keg. I typically bottle after 14 days.

    FERMENT. temp too low ?

As long as you didn't pitch in the 80s and then let it cool, which a lot of first timers do - including myself LOL - you should have a fine beer. Congrats on your first brew, by the way! :mug:

    Stout final number question

21 years. Still have friends and family there, so I visit when I can.

    FERMENT. temp too low ?

It should have a positive effect on the taste. I submerged a fermometer in my swamp cooler and it stopped working, so I stuck another one just above the water line, but still over the beer, of course. I don't measure the water temp, I just make sure the fermometer stays in the low 60s and my...

Brilliant! With emphasis on not so brilliant!

Sounds like something I would do. I'm always giddy on brew day. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!

    Stout final number question

I had a pretty similar situation with a stout last weekend. In fact, my numbers were almost identical to yours. What yeast did you use? I went with WLP001 as mine is an American stout. Anyway, I decided 15 days was enough and just went ahead and bottled it (I don't secondary). I could have taken...

Left hand MS super low attenuation

If I can't get my temp low enough, I just transfer it to my carboy, throw it in a rubbermaid box with cold water and pitch the next morning. Fortunately, I have a room under the house that's a steady 68 degrees, so it's no problem keeping my fermentation temp in the low 60s by tossing in frozen...

Pitched warm (82 F) with starter

You'll likely get off flavors. I pitched at similar temps on my first couple of brews and they turned out crappy. I was brewing kits and the instructions didn't really specify what temp to pitch at. Thinking I was following instructions I blamed my sanitization. After double cleaning my...

Questions about The amount of debris in my wort.

Yeah, congrats man! My son was born in January. Knowing that the brewing would slow down I bought/built my AG equipment and read a lot of books and forums during his first 6 months in order to stay motivated. Needless to say, here I am back at it and my beer's WAY better! Cheers!!

Questions about The amount of debris in my wort.

Yeah, I train in to Manhattan daily. I did a few extract kits from NB and Midwest last year and switched to AG a couple months ago. My first batch, a simple pale ale, was pretty crappy, but I was just dialing in my equipment/process and likely fermenting at too high a temperature. Since then...

Questions about The amount of debris in my wort.

I buy my base malt online, but get all of my specialty grain, yeast and hops from WF Bowery. I usually stop in a couple times a week to browse the beer selection. Went in last week for some yeast and they were totally out of everything homebrew related and removing a lot of "useless" stuff from...

Can you pitch too much yeast?

I had the same question today and I'll report back in a couple of months with my results. I just grew a 240 billion cell starter of WLP001 for an IPA with an estimated post boil gravity of 1.065. This is only my second all grain batch, so I'm not totally dialed in yet and I ended up at around...

    Hot Yeast!

    Hot Yeast!

Here is my starter after about 30 hours at room temp. I haven't seen any krausen, but it looks like the yeast are healthy. The weather also just got a lot cooler and I'm considering a boil tonight. Any reason why this might not take-off in a 5 gallon batch of wort? *not only is this my first...
