Calling all PET, PETE & Better bottle users

You're right about the media machine. We are now in November sweeps, a period where TV news outlets run sensational stories (how a trampoline can kill/5 things you should know about laundry detergent, etc) to gain the most viewers. Why? Because the number of viewers during sweeps is used to set...

    Hey there from Ohio

Welcome and good luck getting back in the saddle. I work in downtown Columbus and know the homebrew spots around town. Let me know if you're looking for a local homebrew store, where to buy CO2 (harder than you think), etc.

    New Brewer In Four Corners

Welcome! I've got some friends in Durango. Beautiful area out there.

    Quitting brewing

I recently got over a string (well, two) of infected batches in a row. Finally, I discovered a ring of black in my siphon hose (some kind of infection) right after the hose clamp. In both cases, I had this kind of sweet but funky smell that was the same in both batches that overpowered the...

    Latest corny sources

I need one more keg, but I haven't bought cornys since March and my sources, mainly brewersdiscount out of NC, has dried up. Any good sources out there? I searched the forum for cornys but found only an e-bay listing for a 4-keg deal, but I really just need one more. SWMBO might have my @ss if...

    Tasted the first batch ever.

I've brewed four batches so far, and have drank three of said batches. All, tasted fantastic...eventually. Some of the best advice I've recieved on this forum is "have patience." Beers that taste like shat at 6 weeks may taste great at 8. Bottom line: when it doubt, wait it out. Cheers! Pen

    Sam Summer Clone ingredients

Corriander may be a good sub for grains of paradise. Blue moon is a similar beer in some respects and it uses orange instead of lemon and corriander instead of grains of paradise. Good luck. I'm t-minus two weeks until I tap my SA Summer Ale clone and the grains of paradise are still...

    What to brew next?

I'm new too, but since you asked, the Irish Red Ale kit from Austin Home Brew was fantastic. I'm brewing it again this Saturday. Last weekend, I kegged my Sam Adams Summer Ale Clone, so it'll be a couple of weeks before I know how that one turned out. :mug:

    simple co2 questions

My 5lb co2 tank did the same...reading low in the fridge, nearly in the red. I posed a similar question and was basically told, yeah, it reads low in the fridge. By the by, I recently turned up the fridge thermostat from 38 to 70 to keep the temperature regulated for a beer in primary. When...

Hold the pepper on my Summer Ale, if you please...

    Finished gravity

My last beer, (also my first) finished high. Was supposed to be 1.012 and stuck at 1.018. I ended up with a 4.5 abv and it was one of the best beers my picky @ss has ever had. If it doesn't finish, don't worry about it. If it taste good, drink it. :tank:

just kegged - what is approprieate serving temp

I just finished an Irish Red Ale a few weeks back (cry, cry....it was so good). I hooked it up to 12 psi for a week and it was good. I did ease it back to just over 10 when I began drinking to bring the head down a little. By the way, I'm serving mine around 38-40 degrees.

Hold the pepper on my Summer Ale, if you please...

Curse you, grains of paradise. This, the "exotic" ingredient in Sam Adams Summer Ale clone (AHB) is overpowering my beer, now towards the end of secondary. It's peppery; smacks of black liqourice. Not so tasty or refreshing as summer ales go. Any thoughts on how to the balance the taste and...

It's so sad when you're first brew is gone.

Yeah, drinking most of it green was really the bummer part. My brothers and and I kind of had at it once it had some carbonation. During the last week it was fantastic. The bitterness the had been hanging around all but dissapeared. I think the trick from here forward will be to not put on the...

    Making the most of yeast

Hi all, I'm looking to bring the cost of my batches down and one way I though I'd do this is spliting a white labs yeast into two, creating big starters for both, thus giving me the ability to make two batches with one vial of yeast. Possible? Advisable?

It's so sad when you're first brew is gone.

R.I.P. first homebrew. Tonight, I got the first glassfull of foam, signaling the last of a wonderful Irish Red Ale, my first venture into homebrewing. Damn, I'm sad. What will I do without my homebrew? Will I (gasp) have to pay for commercial beer? I'm brewing a summer ale on Saturday...

What kind of burner to get?

I bought a 55k turkey fryer from Lowes and it does really well. I get a full, 6g boil in 10-15 minutes. You can shell out the cash on a really high btu burner, but I think the turkey fryer set up is more than sufficient to heat up a 6 gallon brew. I have to turn it way down to keep from...
