    Possible leak??

I filled a corny keg last week, purged off o2, put about 12lbs of Co2 and left in my refrigerator to carbonate on its own. (I don't have it permanently hooked up to gas) 4 or 5 days later I hooked the gas back up to the keg, with the regulator set at the same pressure, and when I did i could...

    taste question

I just sampled my first batch last night. I did a German Alt recipe from extract. It fermented for 3 weeks total, and has now been in a keg for 3 additional weeks. Carbonation is great. However I am unsure about the taste. The initial taste when you first take a drink is good, however the...

    taste after fermentation

I am on my first batch. Extract German alt recipe. Fermentation started fine, but died down quickly. I transfered to my secondary on day 3 (I know now that was too soon), and it has been in my secondary for 9 days. (12 days total). All fermentation activity seems to have stopped. I do not...

    Easy Hefe Recipe

I am looking for a good Hefe recipe for my 2nd batch. I need something that is all extract or extract with steeping. Also, will I need a starter since I will be (more than likely) using a liquid yeast? And will by 6.8 gallon carboy be large enough to prevent blow off in the first stages of...

    kegging question

I already have a kegerator at my house. So what would be involved (Cost and equipment) to keg my homemade brew instead of bottling it. Since I am going to have to buy bottles anyway, I was thinking I could just keg it. Thoughts?

    fermentation question

On my first batch, I am afraid I got too impatient. I did a german alt extract batch. I put it in the primary, and within 2 days the krausen had settled down, and the airlock was only bubbling once every 2 minutes. At that point I transferred to my secondary. it has now been 4 more days (6...

    weldless valve

I am currently trying to convert an empty keg into a keggle. I see the weldless valves that are sold at places like northern brewery. My question is will the o-rings that are used to seal it hold up to the very high temperatures at the bottom of the keg? It seems like the rubber seal would melt.

    keggle question

I have access to a keg that already has the top cut out of it. However there is no valve in the bottom. I plan on getting a no weld type of valve. My only concern at this point is how to filter out the trub. I use pellet type hops. I saw a picture on this forum that shows just a simple...

    1st brew comments/questions

As the title says, I am 72 hours into my first brew. I am brewing a German Alt. Unfortunately a friend of mine who had a hyrdrometer he was going to let me borrow, had to go out of town unexpectantly. So therefore, I have not been able to take any readings. I steeped some grains, then boiled...

    sanitizing question

I am now on the 2nd fermentation stage of my first brew, and the only thing that I consider a negative in the whole thing is sanitizing. For my first brew I soaked everything in a bleach solution. Trying to get the bleach smell out of a 5 and 7 gallon carboy is not fun  I was...

all grain vs mini mash question

Can someone explain the difference between all grain and doing a mini mash. I have read and (think) I understand the principle and steps involved in doing a mini mash. I have a 3 gallon water cooler, that I am going to use for a mini mash my next brew. However I have read several websites...

    quick beginner question

I feel stupid for asking this but when I put the airlock on my fermenter, do I put the lid on the airlock, or just put water (or vodka) in it,and leave the lid off. Tim

    1st brew

I am doing my first brew tonight. I am doing a German alt ale recipe. (I know I probably should have started with something simpler) Anyway after steeping the grains, and bringing back to a boil then adding 6 lbs of extract, the wort is just doing a gentle boil. There is no sign of even...

    beginner malt question

I am about to brew my first batch using the extract steep method. (I eventually plan to go AG) My question is when looking at the 1000's of recipes, how can I tell if it is a recipe for steep or for all grain method? Or how can I tell which malts are able to be steeped and which ones must be...
