    Dumb Beersmith 2 question

So I've made the leap to all-grain, with about 5 batches under my belt, counting the one currently in the fermenter. I'm using Beersmith, but I'm realizing it needs some tweaking to match my particular setup. To wit, my boil kettle tends to boil off more than it expects. I have my recipes set...

you know you're a homebrewer when...

When you need a blowoff tube . . . for your starter! It's on its second stepup for an IPA, and I think it wants to eat the kitchen.

    Official Broken Hydrometer Count

Dropped it on the floor and got distracted by something else right afterward. Came back to the kitchen, and promptly stepped on it. Thankfully, with shoes on. 1201.

You know you're a home brewer when?

When you clean up after bottling an IPA, empty the hop sock into the garbage disposal, turn it on, and keep cleaning up. Then notice 2 minutes later that the hops have somehow migrated through the disposal intact and clogged both sink drains. I had no idea this was even possible. Time to grab...

    Dumb underpitching question

Racked to secondary and dryhopped today. Yes, we have no bananas. :D We'll see how a Chinook IPA turns out; very bitter and piney right now, but it's room temperature and flat, so that will change somewhat.

    Dumb underpitching question

Thanks for the help! Well the yeast certainly didn't need the help; it went bonkers for about 2 days. First time I've had krausen through 4 feet of blowoff tube into the mason jar. :drunk: As has been mentioned; I'll just make sure I pitch a starter next time; I think it's past time to...

    Dumb underpitching question

So I just brewed an IPA last night, which turned out just north of 1.070 OG with 5.5 gallons into primary. Unfortunately, when I went to pitch the yeast (Wyeast 1056), I realized that I had missed the smackpack inside the yeast when I smacked it before brewing. It fell out into the funnel when...

    NW Bourbon Barrel Porter dilemma

Well, that one's a keeper. Slightly over 2 weeks in the bottle, and I broke down and tried two. Definitely on the sweeter side, not sure if that's from the bourbon or the hopping error. Can't really taste the oak. I primed with 5/8 cup dark brown sugar and it seems to be slow getting up to a...

Story about turning brewers yeast into multicellular organisms

Sounds like a plan. If it clones me, I can get more work done. Grocery bill might be an issue, though.

Story about turning brewers yeast into multicellular organisms

So if I wash and reuse a yeast cake, how many times can I use it before my beer comes crawling out of the carboy?

    NW Bourbon Barrel Porter dilemma

Hmm . . . interesting info. Didn't realize the 10 minutes would make such an effect on the IBUs. I'll have to learn to do the math on that, though hopefully not under a time crunch! :) I was trying to save some since the original recipe called for aroma hops. If it was an IPA, I'd be more...

    NW Bourbon Barrel Porter dilemma

So I started brewing the aforementioned extract kit, and goofed. It included an ounce of Goldings and an ounce of Chinook. Chinook is supposed to go in for 60 minutes, then half the Goldings for 15 minutes and the other half for 5. Guess which packet I chucked in at the boil. Yup. Wrong...

    Stupid kegging question

Well, I figured I have a shot at getting up to the store tomorrow or Tuesday, so I figured I'd just bite the bullet on a CO2 setup then. I went ahead and racked to the keg and simply closed it up. I figure two days to get some CO2 in a sanitized container won't hurt the beer much as long as I...

    Stupid kegging question

Heh. I think I'll pass on that idea. :D Yes, the stove is inop as well. If I had realized herding cats . . . I mean contractors would have taken this long, I'dve passed on this batch. Edit: Hmm . . . I do have a microwave. I thought you had to boil DME before using it to prime though...

    Stupid kegging question

Thanks for the advice; I was toying with throwing it in the keg or back in a 6gal Better Bottle; my prime goal was to get it off the hops and then figure out the dispensing issues later. I was planning on dispensing it from the keg; I'm just learning the process still. Maybe I should bleed the...

    Stupid kegging question

So I've been slammed at work, and have an IPA that has been sitting in secondary dry-hopping for 2 weeks, which is 4 days longer than planned. The last thing I want to do this weekend is scrub, sanitize, and fill a bunch of bottles, as my kitchen is currently being remodeled and I have no...

Second batch, first post with some n00b questions

So I solved my own question, I think. The porter turned out great (now to start futzing with it and make it better). I used considerably less than 53 bottles to bottle the stuff, though. This caused synapses to misfire when I noticed, but I didn't put two and two together at the time. I...

Second batch, first post with some n00b questions

Greetings! I've been lurking here for awhile and it seems that I've gotten through my first batch of beer without screwing it up or losing my sanity, due in large part to spending way too much time on this forum. Thanks guys! :D I'm getting my stuff from NW Brewer's Supply in Anacortes, WA...
