    Strange ingredients

Wormwood is not toxic unless in very high doses, i.e. pure wormwood oil (even then, it requires roughly 45mg/kg to be lethal, so if you can drink a pint of pure oil you might just die). It is an ingredient in absinthe, which was thought to be a cannabinoid or a hallucinogen, although what...

3 ?'s about my upcoming Hefe

I did 6.6# lme, 1oz hallertauer (3/4oz at 60, 1/4oz at 15), and used WLP300 German Hefeweizen. Fermented a little too warm starting around 70F and ended up finishing around 78F. Banana was almost overpowering the flavor, it's mellowed off some as it's sat around for 1 1/2 months. Second...

I probably need to stop worrying

I checked it today, dropped a whole point to 1.019. I ran the numbers on it and it's better than 5% abv, slightly high gravity for the style. Racked it and then popped open a couple of stouts and remembered that my beer is awesome.

I probably need to stop worrying

I swirled the wort and got the yeast back up, waiting to see what happens. If it finishes, great, if not, I'm considering adding Danstar Nottingham next to see if that finishes it off.

I probably need to stop worrying

I think it's stopped because all activity has stopped, krausen has fallen completely, and the yeast are dropping down to the bottom of the primary, gravity of 1.020 has held for 2 days now.

Do you sparge steeping grains in an extract brew?

I use about 1/2 gallon - full gallon of hot tap water to sparge. Do it until the water runs fairly clear.

    Chiller Question

Okay, I'm trying to figure out how not to overchill my beer, or find out if this is even a problem. I put together an immersion chiller with 25' 3/8" copper tubing, some polyester tubing to hook up to the sink and to drain it, and fittings to the sink. After the boil was over, I put this...

    Huge State Beer Tax Increase!

In Michigan also, there is an attempt being lead by Larry Bell (of Bell's Brewery) along with the Michigan Brewers Assoc. to increase the deposit on kegs to $30. The reasoning is because people aren't returning them or using them for other purposes (see keggles). Scrap prices on kegs runs...

    Punchlines....

And then he shot the dog. Little Johnny said "That's my uncle bending over in the shower to pick up the soap." I f*cked your dog, i sh*t in your purse, I'm outta here. I'd like to show ya, but I don't think I could fit another potato up my ass. Bubbles is the girl next door. Seamus, you're...

    Weekend

Last weekend: Friday: went to the bar, then wound up with a lesbian in my hot tub *wink wink* Saturday: drank my own beer, and watched hockey, go red wings Sunday: brewed my ESB, then went to the bar, and wound up in my hot tub with a couple friends. I call it a success.

    If there were no homebrew/micro/craft?

I'd be a sad, lost soul if it weren't for good beer.

    getting a wort chiller!

I got the tubing at an Ace Hardware down the street. It was labeled $17.49 for 25' 3/8" tubing. I didn't ask the guys working their silly questions of why the tubing was so cheap, I just paid. I'm guessing it's the soft medium wall variety.

    How much do you brew?

I've been reading on here off and on for a couple months now, and I read about people buying full sacks of grain. So I'm curious, how much are you all brewing in a year? Personally, as an extract brewer three brews in I'm looking at maybe one 5 gallon batch a month, so 60 gallons a year.

    "Micro" brew/BMC conspiracy?

I personally detest Blue Moon. Blue Moon has been owned by Coors for quite awhile and brewed at their Memphis brewery. And to any bar owner who calls Blue Moon an 'import,' remember that Memphis, Tennessee is in the USA.

    getting a wort chiller!

There are threads all over this forum to make an immersion chiller. Here's what I did a couple of days ago: Parts: 25' 3/8" copper tubing 2 4' lengths 1/2" polyester tubing sink -> garden hose attachment Garden hose to a smaller (I don't know size) attachment Adapter for dishwasher tubing, cut...

    "Micro" brew/BMC conspiracy?

I looked up Goose Island, and sadly AB has a hand in them. AB owns 39.5% of Widmer Brothers, and Widmer has a minority stake in Goose Island (also Kona Brewing for that matter.) So AB does indirectly have a share in Goose Island, the benefit for them being that Goose Island gets to ride AB's...
