    refractometer readings

Thanks for the reply ArcLight. The refractometer we have has both Brix and SG scales with ATC. I believe you are correct at when we took the measurement and having sugar content at different levels. When we are testing during boil the localized sugar content shouldn't be an issue since it's...

    refractometer readings

Brewed a Scottish Ale today. Everything goes great according to recipe. All numbers add up during mash, sparge, boil, etc. OG is to reach 1.077, refractometer reads just where we are suppose to be. Start cool down and rack into primary, checked OG again and refractometer is now reading 1.074...

What does a starter on a stirplate look like?

We use a stirplate with our starters. We will use a dry yeast with about 500 ml of cooled wort and let it stir for about 20 minutes or as long as it takes to get primary filled up and aerated. From what I have observed the fermentation seems to have taken quicker, providing temp is constant, vs...

    lager to ale

Has anybody used an ale yeast in a lager recipe? Reason I ask is a friend of mine loves Haufbrau and wants me to brew a batch, but I don't have the means to do a lager. Any suggestions? Thanks RAZ

Tell me if I was right or wrong in saying this?

Alrighty, out of the secondary and into bottles. Final gravity was 1.016 with O.G. of 1.055. So far so good. Now a waiting game for conditioning. I want to thank all you folks for answering any questions I had and hope to brew and tip a few glasses with you someday. RAZ

Tell me if I was right or wrong in saying this?

I'm not worried about alcohol content as much as I am taste. If the beer is good to the palate, that is all that matters. Everything else will fall into place.

Tell me if I was right or wrong in saying this?

Well kids, racked into the secondary Monday night and all is well. I took a gravity reading and it was 1.020 with an OG of 1.055. A little higher than I expected but still in the range that the supplier told me. Will the gravity still drop a little while in the secondary? I did notice a little...

    Phoenix Area Pubs

If you want to try something different, get their beer milkshake. I know it sounds gross but it is good. they use their oatmeal stout instead of milk.

Tell me if I was right or wrong in saying this?

I am using a pail. I believe I will be buying a couple of glass primaries. They aren't that expensive. I'm pretty sure I have as good as a seal that the pail will allow. I don't think I could trust a piece of plastic to seal as good as rubber. Plus there is more surface area to cover on the...

Tell me if I was right or wrong in saying this?

Hello Gents, here's my situation. My buddy and I made our first batch Wednesday night. Everything went well and got it in the Primary. OG was 1.055. Fermentation was slow to start and my buddy was worried. I told him to give it another day and we'll see. Of course it took off without a hitch...
