Did you build a "Son of Fermentation Chiller"?

Good stuff, just wondering where you guys were able to find the foam board like that. I went to Lowe's today and they didn't have 4'x8' nor did they have the extruded type. What type did you use when you made yours? Thanks.

    Gotta lay off the ice....

Thats an impressive drop....was the ambient temp 90? Also, I'm curious what the humidity is like where you live.

    Fermenter Cold Chest

Well I'm trying to do this without a fan, pretty much would just be an ice box. pldoolittle seemed to use this method with success.

    Fermenter Cold Chest

Thanks everyone, I'll probably try building it soon....if it turns out well I'll post a step by step way to do it.

    Fermenter Cold Chest

The igloo looks good, but I really was looking for a cheaper option. Do you think a styrofoam box would work for this?

    Fermenter Cold Chest

Well, I replied to a thread where pldoolittle talked about a cold box, with was basically an insulated box that kept the fermenting temperatures around 66 degrees, but I fear that it may be left by the way side. As a brewer who lives in Georgia, this held my interest. Basically, room...

My failed attempt at temp. control, wah, waaahhh

I'm interested in what pldoolittle is talking about, making just a simple ice box for my fermenter. Basically in my apartment room temperature liquid is about 81 degrees, and it would be nice if I could ferment at about 66-68. Any suggestions how to make something like he was talking about...

    Dual buckets, dual spigots

Does anyone use this set-up? Basically use two plastic fermenters, both with spigots. You would use one as the primary, when its done use the spigot to transfer into the bottling bucket, then bottle. I realize that getting too much trub in the bottling bucket might be a concern, but it seems...

New Home Brewer Stone Mountain GA

Welcome aboard. I live in Lilburn, GA when I'm not up in Athens for college. This is a very good resource, I'm sure you'll find it helpful, especially in the beginning.

    Wort chillers?

I wouldn't think it would be much more water than, say, the amount you use in the shower everyday. Might be wrong though, but then again you're probably only going to be using it twice a month at most (unless you really, really love brewing).

How soon should one advance to all grain brewing?

Hehe, well luckily I am a college student and have very little money, so I'm not able to spend lots of money on the hobby. And anyway, I didnt only mean that AG pays for itself in terms of dollars, but also the amount of quality that improves.

How soon should one advance to all grain brewing?

I did one full extract, two partial mash, and then I went to AG. Don't let the costs scare you, you can do perfectly good AG for alot less money. I got a turkey fryer for about 40, made my MLT for about 30, and I'll be making my wort chiller for about 30 for my next batch. So thats about...

    LHBS prices

Wow Pabst those are really cheap prices. Yeah I'm pretty lucky with my store, hes the only one around for about 80 or so miles (you have to go into atlanta pretty much to find any other stores, but I've heard there are quite a few good ones there).

    LHBS prices

Hey all, I was just wondering what the prices were like at your LHBS. The one I use, Blockader Homebrew Supply in Athens, GA, has the following prices. $1.50 per pound of grain, but if you buy 10+ lbs then its only $1.25/lb This includes all types of grain. Its been a while since I did...

    All grain brewing needs?

I have a 7.5 gallon pot that I just used to boil about 5.5 gallons of wort. I didn't have any problems, just make sure you watch it at the beginning and after each hop addition. Your 35 qt. pot should be fine.

    Yet Another AG NEWB (long)

Is there any reason to let the wort drain completely from the mash tun before adding the sparge water? My last brew I followed howtobrew.com's method. They basically said drain the mash tun until there is about an inch of water above the grain, then start adding the sparge water. Will I get...

    Cooling the fermenter

I think a big part of the problem is that I'm using a plastic fermenter....I could probably lower it by another few degrees if I was using glass.

    Cooling the fermenter

Currently I'm using the swamp cooler method on my plastic fermenter (wet towel in water around the fermenter). I also have the fermenter under the ceiling fan to try to maximize the cooling. However, even with all this its still fermenting at 75 degrees according to my digital thermometer. It...

    Mailing Homebrew

Hey all, From what I've read, some of you send homebrews to each other for tasting and maybe bragging rights :D . Anyway, my question is, whats the best way to send them through the mail? How do you pack them up and such? Thanks
