First time using blichman conical fermenter

I think Yooper posted that one a few months ago somewhere and I started drooling. (about the conical) :) It's quite a bit more expensive than the non-temp control, but I really like the idea of being able to dial in a temp and knowing I'll hit it consistently without having to build a whole...

    Help w/Quest for Clear Beer

+1 for the whirlfloc. I use one tablet at flameout. Never used gelatin and my ales are very clear. I know what you mean about the spear but I think you're just going to miss out on some beer by shortening it. For me I get some sediment when I first tap or if I have to move my kegerator for...

    Can you primary too long?

+1. Prep the keg when you're brewing initially then another 30-40 minutes before you leave will yield the best results IMO. :D

    first all grain beer

Here's one: Double check your amounts when you are getting close to the end and make sure you're good. My son and I went all-grain 3 batches ago and every one since then has found us at the end with just under 5 gallons (were going for a full-boil) and we had to add up. This isn't how we were...

    Clean keg lines are awesome!!!

This is something I heard and read everywhere when I first started and I keep in in mind all the time. I have a 4 tap homemade kegerator and sometimes some of them *gasp* are not used. I got a 5th corny keg when I was setting it up and keep it primed with either star-san or tap cleaning...

Want to keg, can't kegerate yet, please help!

5lbs should be fine. I've had 4 kegs on tap at once. It's just a matter of how long it will last, but for simultaneous use, not a problem in my experience. 4 kegs at a party was no problem for mine.

Kegging is the worst thing I've ever done

Ha-ha. I didn't see this coming when I saw the title. I was like, 'Really? He must be doing it wrong.' But nope. Clearly you're doing it right!:mug: I have the same problem. My son got me into brewing this past winter and I built a kegerator while my very first batch was...

Silly things to think about now that I am ...

If you read the sticky about dogs, read the whole thing. The results aren't really that convincing when you look at the sample. Beyond that, you could take the tap handles off when you're not around or get those little plastic covers for the taps for like 50 cents (I think those little...

How often do you clean/change your beer lines?

I keep a spare keg filled with sanitizer solution in it and flush the lines every couple of weeks by just unhooking the lines and putting the 'cleaning' keg on there. Then if I have any unused taps, I leave the star-san in the line. I also completely disassemble all of the taps about once a...

    want to start kegging

I've tried bottling from the keg and it worked well (although I need to work on my technique, I spilled too much.:( ) but what has been working for me lately is this: I keep a clean growler in the beer fridge with star-san in it and if I'm going out somewhere or someone comes over that wants...

Kegs arriving in 2 days, need a plan

Thanks for the clarification, this is true. There is a formula and you could figure out exactly what pressure to apply to carb at room temp (as mentioned, about 30psi or so) then chill later. I still think it's still going to have to 'equalize' at the new temp at serving pressure just a bit...

    want to start kegging

Kegging is MUCH easier than bottling IMO. For the rest of your questions, you're right about those too. There are a lot of posts out there like this. :) The answer to most of these questions is going to be up to your personal preferences though. I bought most of my kegging equipment...

Kegs arriving in 2 days, need a plan

Congrats on both!!:mug: The beer will absorb CO2 better once it's cold. You could theoretically carb it warm, but then it will have to re-carb once it's chilled anyway. Pressure changes with temperature. I just put mine in the kegerator and put on the CO2 lines at serving pressure and let...

    Need Cleaning and Sanitizing Advice

This. The bottles may be the issue, but if you're not disassembling your racking equipment and really soaking/cleaning it this may be your issue. I think a good cleaning and star-san soak before you bottle is probably ensuring that your bottles are good. PS- I recommend kegging instead of...
