Brinkmann Floor Burner boiling off too much

The title says it all. There is no heat control on the burner so boil over is a bit of an issue. But the main problem is I am boiling off way more than 1Gal, its about 1.5-2Gal for a 1 hour boil. Does anyone else have this problem or any suggestions on how to fix it?

Help with my first all grain recipe

Does anyone think this looks about right for an Amber? 5 Gal 10lb 2 row 1lb Munich 8oz crystal 80L 6oz victory 4oz wheat 4oz cara-pils/dextrin 1oz Willamette at 60,20 and 5 min each WLP001 Is the Cara pils unnecessary because of the wheat?

Rye,crystal and vienna mix for an ipa?

I'm making an IPA tomorrow with a touch of rye malt. Its about 4lbs dme, 2lb 2 row, 1lb Vienna and 1lb 20L crystal. I'm thinking the crystal and Vienna combo might be too much maltiness for an IPA. I'm mostly concerned about the rye and how it will play with the crystal and Vienna. I've never...

are there negative consequences racking into a third fermenter?

It was in primary for 10 days and secondary for 10 more days. FG was definitely reached. I bottled 4 gal and I racked 1gal into a mini fermenter and cold crashed it just to see if it helps. Next brew will have gelatin or some other finings in it to avoid this. I understand clarity isn't the...

are there negative consequences racking into a third fermenter?

I brewed a pale ale and it was very cloudy when I racked into secondary, way cloudier than any other I've brewed. I'd like to help clear it up by racking into a third carboy but I'm concerned it may be unnecessary and may possibly have negative consequences. Any thoughts?

    Recipe Formulation & Ingredients Descriptions

Hi all, I'm still trying to work on recipe formulation but am finding it difficult to decide on which grains work well with some while other grains would be best. This is an Irish Red Rye I'm working on. I'm not going for a traditional Irish red, I'd like a hint of American hops with a solid rye...

Help with extract brewing with oats

I bought 1 lb flaked oats from MLHBS. 2.5L. There's not much more info at all on the package. It was packaged by L.D. Carlson Co. And to 944play, since I don't know how to minimash or mash at all for that fact, Ill use Carapils, I surprisingly have some handy. Thanks

Help with extract brewing with oats

I'm making an extract stout with chocolate and crystal malts and I would like to add oats as well. I'm not looking to use the flaked oats for added sugars but only for added body and better head retention. I'm also only using 1 lb of oats(which is 10% of the grist). My question is whether or not...

Wierd flakes in my extract boil

i just read about whirlpooling. i can just use my sanitized spoon and create a whirlpool then rack the wort. if not, i can transfer into primary and allow it all to fall to the bottom. does this sound right?

Wierd flakes in my extract boil

It's a poor picture but they are lighter colored flakes. They look like grain but I used none. Ed, I dont know what break material is. Can you explain?

Wierd flakes in my extract boil

Very clean. I'm obsessed with sanitation and cleanliness. It seems as though the flakes were clumped together and when I moved the pot to chill it they broke up. Before I found the hop sacks at the bottom I thought they had disintegrated and I was very freaked out. Now I'm just confused

Wierd flakes in my extract boil

I just brewed an all extract APA and used hop sacks. At the end of the boil I've found odd flakes of something in the beer. It's not hops or grains and I'm not sure what they are. I've looked around on the computer but found no results. Anyone have any clues?

    Hello from Chicago!

Hi, I'm pretty new as well. I just moved to Evanston from Chicago a few months ago when I started brewing. I'd love to trade some brews with you, just as soon as I make some I can be proud of. They're all drinkable, some better than others but only one stood out so far, a rye PA. I have some...

    STICKIES AND FAQs

I'm in the same boat as you are. I purchased three 1 gallon jugs and some extra airlocks aside from my two 5 gallon fermenters and I just wing it. Some turned out pretty good and some were a bust. I've found that reading and deciphering other peoples recipes helps a lot. I'm still new at making...

What do you think of this 3gal batch?

Thanks Skye. I'll do some more reading before I continue. Just when I think I know how this is done I learn something new

What do you think of this 3gal batch?

I'm still pretty new at this so I'm just throwing items together on ibrewmaster and seeing what happens. I figure I'll learn the hard way but still learning nonetheless. I'll try what you suggest and cut the 2 row. I was planning on steeping the grains. I don't know if that's called mashing...

What do you think of this 3gal batch?

Screw it, tomorrow I'll suck it up and travel down to my LHBS and pick up some more two row. I figure another lb of 2 row and a total of 4lbs DME and .5lb corn sugar should get me right in the pale ale range. Magnum at 60min, EKG at 15 and warrior at 10. Also I changed it to a 5gal. I think this...

    Adding sugar after main fermentation

Does adding corn sugar after primary fermentaion add to the alcohol level? I read to make a 'hyper beer' you can add small amounts of sugar a little at a time to slowly boost the ABV. Is this correct? Are there any other concerns i should have when doing this?
