you need a thermowell (something to stick the thermocouple from the controller in) so it gets the temp. but doesnt get wet...some people by them and some find ways to make them with copper tubing and stuff...an example would be part number 3957K68 on mcmaster.com
i used one of those in my 10 gal round cooler forever until i actually made a copper manifold....they work great....just wedged it in the bottom....you might have to use a wine corkscrew to get it out when you are done.
i think pol is using an a-419 with no problem with the same heating element you are wanting to use. on the mcmaster website it advertises the a-419 at 15 amps max. part number 1760K77
i have actually mashed over night in a cooler with a coat wrapped around it and then sparged and boiled the next day. i didnt have any problem with souring at all the efficiency was great.
i was going to brew today and thought about roasting bout 1lb of 2-row for 30min at 350. i know some people let it rest for a few days or weeks and some people roast and brew the next day.....just wanted to get someone's input that have roasted and used the same day.....what the outcome was.
