What temp to use for pitching hydrated yeast into wort?

I started to get activity this afternoon in the fermenter. Broke the rule of homebrewing and I didn't have patience. However, pitching yeast into 98 degrees then cooling has me worried but 05 is pretty resilient. I'm expecting some off flavors due the high pitching temp. I did read the Palmer...

What temp to use for pitching hydrated yeast into wort?

I usually pitch the yeast dry directly to the wort. I've been reading about benefits of hydrating yeast. So I tried yesterday. This is a 5 gallon batch of 1.06 and using one packet of Safale 05. I boiled water and cooled it to 98 degrees and added dry yeast to 1 cup water. Now, the...

    Fermenting Safale 05 Temperature

Hi all - I'm fermenting a 5 gal batch of pale ale, about 10 lb grain bill. I used Safale 05 yeast with no starter and pitched directly into wort at 61 degrees. My carboy is stored in the basement where ambient temps stay 62-65. I brewed last Sunday (today is Friday). After brewing some ok all...

Using only primary cause bottled brew to condition faster?

Thx, even thought the topic went a little off the mark ; ) Looking through my notes a couple of more things stick out....I didn't aerate the first batch much at all before fermentation, the second batch I shook the crap out of; the first batch I didn't stir the priming sugar, the second batch I...

Using only primary cause bottled brew to condition faster?

As a noob I am learning and figuring things that go right or wrong during brewing. I keep my journals to compare different processes. So, I have now bottled 2 extract kits. The first batch (Irish Red)I did a secondary rack. I kept in primary 9 days, secondary 12 and then bottled. It's been...

Testing brew after a week, to chill or not chill

Houston....we have bubbles! I could taste the difference in today's test. A little crispness to the beer. Nothing exciting but the beer poured and bubbles rose to the top of the glass. Most of them stuck to the sides of the glass. No head but definitely a difference from Friday's test. Pretty...

Testing brew after a week, to chill or not chill

Yes, it was just the 5 oz package the came with the kit. I used Revvy's idea and poured part of the primer into the bucket first and then the other half about mid way through siphoning. But, I didn't really stir it all.

Testing brew after a week, to chill or not chill

I know it's way too early to deem the quality or carbonation but I want to kinda chart the progress of conditioning as I have never brewed before. I am trying to keep decent journals of my first two batches. Or at least it's a good excuse to drink the beer to help calm my non patient self. Hell...

Testing brew after a week, to chill or not chill

I'll start by thanking everyone for all posts and the information you each provide on your brewing advice. I have bottled my first ever batch, a simple Irish Red. Typical newbie thing, 9 days in primary, 12 days in secondary then bottled (have a brown ale now that I will not transfer to a...

    Beginning Brewer from Ohio

Welcome from Jackson Twp. Nice to see other beginners in the area. I have just brewed my second extract batch. Now, it's just patience :( I bought both of my kits at Grape and Granary in Akron. I didn't know Portage Beverage had brewing stuff until a few days ago. I have to stop in there...

Pre-boiling water to dechlorinate and storing

I've seen a few posts similar but just wanted a consensus. I was hoping to cut some time off my brew day. Is it ok to pre-boil water to dechlorinate and store the water in sanitized sealed containers (like gallon water jugs) in the fridge? I'm thinking a day or two before brew day is ok but what...

Just racked to secondary....why you ask?

I will be looking into another fermenter soon. It seems like more people just do primary and go w/o secondary. Since it's my first batch I'll get through a couple more before I step it up a notch. The basics are overwhelming enough.

Just racked to secondary....why you ask?

I stayed with the majority. Primary is a 6.5 gal and secondary is a 5 gal. I read that a 5 gal is not good for primary fermentation.

Just racked to secondary....why you ask?

To make my primary available to brew another batch this weekend! I can't wait to get my pipeline started. It is my first ever batch and is going good so far. It was in primary for 9 days, and hit my SG on target at 1.013 (1.052 OG), pretty stoked about that:rockin:. I know most people don't go...

Thank you for all of your posted information

I got some Irish Red going, nothing too complex. I have 2 carboys for primary and secondary. I'm already thinking about creating my "pipeline" and how to best handle it. I want to wait to see how my first batch turns out before I start other but it was so damn fun to brew!
