    Barleywine Yeast

I'm trying to determine how much Safale 05 to add in secondary to finish a 12% ABV Barleywine. By finish, I mean I'll use 05 after an S04 & Notty yeast cake from a wheat IPA, does it's work. I know S04&Notty cake will not function well above about 9% ABV, so the S05 will finish above 9%. The...

    Fermentables,Attenuation, and Specific Gravity Mathematics

The goal of this post is to propose a couple of ideas about the mathematics of fermentables and attenuation: One can find several posts here, and on other forums, where home brewers make some assumptions in there brewing calculations about attenuation, but I can find no proposed set of...

Add blow off wort back to fermenter?

Just experienced my first violent fermentation. I've lost 1.5 gallons out the blow off into a bucket. Can the blow off wort be put back into the fermenter? What if that blow off wort is reboiled first? Bad ideas?

    Mineral content of MoreBeer! Extract?

I prefer to buy local, but I'm paying too much for extract here. Plus, I would like (and need) to control the mineral content, if possible, in my extract. I see that MoreBeer! buys its extract manufactured (for MoreBeer!) in the San Francisco Bay area. A Web search shows that SF's water is...

Thoughts on ancient famous water sources

I'm starting a new discussion based on my thoughts in another thread, (https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f128/too-much-additives-350739/) where I was given advice about the pros and cons of emulating an ancient water source, such as Burton on Trent. I'm wondering about this idea: that we do not...

    Too much?

Brewed a double ipa last night with distilled water, 2# grain BIAB, 7# extract, safale 04. Just realized I added the full 1.5 oz vial of Wyeast Yeast Nutrient instead of 1/2 tsp. and added 2 tblsps of Burton Salts. What have I done to the brew?

    Real Time Clock?

So what is your opinion about the need for a Real Time Clock on an AutoBrew system? Mine is Arduino, which does not come with one. Software can be used to create real time, but needs to be updated.

    Design and Layout

I'm planning to do a complete brew and ferm controller package. What is suggested for planning and designing the final layout of all of the hardware? I can see: power supplies (yes more than 1), Arduino, shields, relays, GLCD, buttons, encoder, lights, wires, external communication...

    Positioning valve actuator for liquid

I'm looking for a ball valve with a positioning actuator. The purpose is to control liquid pump volume output with a feedback loop, through an Arduino, from a flow meter. So far, cheapest is a valve with a pneumatic actuator for over four hundred. Any thoughts?

    Yeast suspended in beer

10th brew is a Boddingtons Pub Ale clone, partial mash. Used British Ale 005 from White Labs. 14 days in primary, 21 days in bottle, no clarifiers. The yeast is clearly suspended at pour, and that is after leaving the cake in bottom of bottle. Beer has a strong bittery yeast flavor. When I...

    Lautering w/o tun

I am trying to make an Oatmeal Stout, and cannot find an extract online. Does anyone know of one? Also, is it possible to do lautering and sparging without a tun. In other words, can I simple strain the wort from the grain, then add fresh hot water to the grain, and strain again?
